I am running OEM 211' s (255/19') w/ Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow RFT's as my winter set since my 2007 and I would not go any other way. I had 18's at first but they were just too soft coming from 20" summers. Granted 211's won't fit the X5M but the 19" combo works well.

anyone try the pirelli ice and snow studded tires on stock rims? Considering going that route next year, as I hate, hate, hate the look of square 255-50-19's on the M. Just wrong.

haha, while i admit they don't look great on the M, but i did it. It's more for function over looks. I would take the traction benefit of a square 255 set with good winters over looks anyday so there won't be regrets when the car is sliding towards a barrier on ice

I am using the Pirelli Winter Carving Run Flat Snow in a squared 275/40/20 configuration. Some of the best snow tires I've ever owned and great ride too. Here is a link to my post from last year.

Driveway and garage floor was exactly what I was referring to - My thought was that the studs might compensate for extra width of the 315's

I have ran studs on multiple vehicles over the years they do make a huge diffrence for sure, I highly recommend them on dedicated winter tires.

winter tires
I have an X5 5.0 with 19 inch wheels 285/45/19 back and 255/50/19 front
I have summer sport tires and could hardly move in 1/2 inch of snow I was wondering what would be an ideal tire for the winter i need performance as well as some traction should i go with snow tires or all season? What are pros and cons of each can you recommend a brand and size thanks |

to keep it short and simple, if you want all out winter capability, go for a winter tire, Nokians are amazing for that.
if you don't see a lot of snow and ice, a good allrounder is the conti DWS |

The DWS are a great in the snow for an all season but like Sonny said above you can't beat all out winter tires for snow and ice but if you don't get a to. Of snow where you live I would try the continental DWS of an all season tire.

How many miles can I get out of DSW before they're useless in snow?
I live in upstate NY, get quite a lot of snow. Whats the best size for 19in wheels? Should I keep them staggered like OEM? What size is better for snow 255 or 275? Is there much difference? |

If you are planning on fitting them on your current rim, go for the OEM tire size.
as for how long conti lasts, it completely depends on the mileage you do yearly. But there is the DWS logo on the tire tread, when the S is warn out, they will not do well in snow any longer. My guess is around 2-3 yrs of driving, depending on mileage. As for the 3, it's really not fair to compare all season to winters, it's your personal call if you want a set of dedicated tires for winter and another set for summer season, or just a set for all season. I have had DMV1, they are good in snow, but not great when dry and warm (above freezing) the tires are very soft and does not corner well. No personal experience with Pirelli, so can't comment |

DWS and Pirelli don't come in OEM sizes 285/45/19 back and 255/50/19 front
Im thinking 275/45/19 DWS all around. Will this work? Or should I get 255/50 all around? Will getting 275 over 255 make a significant difference for winter driving? |

The rule of thumb is narrow tires work better on snow and ice. The 275's may not be as good in theory but I am not sure it would be noticeable. Having winter rubber will be the most important factor. With square setup, you can rotate the tires. On the x5, I still find my backs wear more than the fronts so u can rotate them for a more even wear. I simply tract the tread depth and rotate them appropriately.

I have the blizzak 275/40 R20 front and rear. The rear are stretched on the 315/35 R20 and im not keen on the look but they are great in the deep snow and ice. Can't wait to put the summers back on.

Diesel: What is your OEM exact size setup? Is it staggered? Does this mess with your traction control etc? do you get warning lights, error messages? did you consult anyone before doing this?
