X5d loss of power uphill

Driving on the freeway at any speed great speed and take off power. Going up a grade on the freeway at 65 when someone pulled in front of me so I slowed down. After that it would not accelerate and eventually slowed down to ~55 mph. When the grade leveled off it could take off like normal.

Never had a diesel before and it really had no power going up the grade. Floored it and dropped it down in gears, nothing.

Anyone seen or heard of this?

Doesn't sound normal. I had my 35D loaded with furniture yesterday and was heading up a grade yet had no problems passing people even without dropping a gear.

Thanks Socale, it was going up the Grapevine. We will see what happens on the return.

Grapevine is a pretty long incline. Did you have any errors or warnings pop up? A/C on?

Piece of shit...
Back over the Grapevine like a champ, stopped off for burgers like before and after awhile total loss of power on level ground. Nothing like going 35-60 mph on a 70mph highway. It seems like a tennis ball under the pedal, no matter how hard you push or what the revs are it doesn't go. Throttle position sensor, running on three cylinders? It comes and goes and no dash lights. Took a parallel road back home and stayed off the main highway. Pulled hard and no problems. I hope it threw codes into the computer or I'm screwed.
Cold start, runs like hell
After running hours, stopping for a bit and then resuming the trip, the gremlins start to appear.
Multiple stops and restarts while the gremlin is happening do nothing. After a stop, pop the hood and pull the engine cover, it ran like a bat out of hell again.
Engine always ran smooth, no lights, mpg gauge would stay above 20 mpg while flooring it and when it was acting up it sounded more like a gas engine then a oil burner.

Socale,
From Fountain Valley to Kettleman City went fine. Pulled off finally at Pea Soup Andersens and took 33 and back roads back to Contra Costa County. Sucked big time.

I'm very surprised you don't have a check engine light with all those issues. Without pulling codes we can only guess. Best bet is to pull the codes or if you can't have someone else do it for you. From there we can get a better understanding of the issue.

Can't be water or fuel. Otherwise it wouldn't pull at other times very hard.
Yup, really surprised the CEL didn't come up on me. I'll bring it to the dealer soon and they better give me any codes they find.

Sounds like what happened when my car threw me the "engine malfunction - reduce engine output" messages due to EGR cooler leak. There's almost certainly something wrong with the car and it's very peculiar that it isn't giving you any messages or codes.

If you haven't changed the fuel filter within the past 2-3 years, do it first. Low fuel flow could easily be a problem here. Diesel filters tend to clog up more quickly than gas variants.

Dealer has had it 24 hours and no word if they even looked at it. I just dumped it on them and awaiting a SA to call me. I guess I have to go down there tomorrow and stir the pot if they don't call me tomorrow.
If it was the fuel filter, it wouldn't of happened just twice in two tanks on a ~900 mile trip. I could imagine why the fuel filter would get dirty, those diesel nozzles are disgusting. I don't think it is emissions related or it would throw the CEL. I wrote on the note to disclose any and all codes reported.

They've got nothing and no clue as to what happened. DME/transmission reflash per BMW N.A or Germany but there was a rail pressure control fault.
Since they couldn't replicate or pull any codes, they opened a case with BMW and they said to reflash it. Tested my gas and said it was all good, drove it 55 miles (hmm lunch wrappers and some sod in the back... ;-) jk.

Now to make a trip somewhere that has side roads back home just in case. I guess it burned oil, it was low.

Oh well, FYI

After only 115 miles it did it again. Seems like only when the engine/outside temp. is hotter. (traffic/ambient)
No warning,dash lights...

The dealer isn't incompetent, it isn't throwing codes and even BMW PUMA can't figure it out. They looked at it today and will look again tomorrow. No evidence that it ever happened, luckily I took the crack pipe out.... or they would accuse me of that.
I'm going to have to carry my camera around with me now :-(

Oh they are absolutely incompetent.
But i enjoy your confidence in them.
I could tell you many stories of going beyond a PUMA case where i solved the issue myself or with the help of a good Indy shop.

But suit yourself... and please let us know once you ... ergh, i meant ... once your dealer figures this out.

The latest today said it could be fuel "algae" but BMW back East is still looking into it. I guess diesel is tricky stuff sometimes.
They wanted the 2015 3er loaner back and gave me a 2016 3er with 10 miles on it. The 15's and 16's do feel different and I think it has better insulation.

Yesterday I talked to the mechanic who worked on it both times and he said there was a slew of codes thrown the first time but nothing much this time. No word yet as of today.

As of 9/11: Fuel tank cleaned, new injector and new fuel pumps. Didn't work on the road test( at least it occurred for them)

They ordered more injectors and a new head. Estimated completion more than a week from now. They've had it 3 weeks this time. I wish I could see what they would have charged me for all of this, it has to be pushing $15-20k

I still think it has to be turbo/wastegate/vacuum issue. At least I know I won't have carbon fouling on the valves or head.

Seems it works when hot, they will try it in the morning on a cold start. Replaced fuel pumps, cleaned the tank, injectors, seals, reprogrammed a few things and it seems the problem was in the head. They sent it out and put it back in.
Today was the 31st day that they have had it this time. Unless it was one of the injectors, I don't see how a valve/head problem could be it.

Fault code 42E2 and I have it back.
per realoem pricing and BMW of South Atlanta the parts list came out to be $9251.00
After the first 3/4 tank, runs fine managed a high of 27mpg and 26 at fill up. Mixed city traffic with hwy.
Something in the head caused it but I would think that the Vanos would be the only thing that could cause it unless there was a partial gasket leak and the head was warped.

Went up to Oregon to see the eclipse a 1600 mile round trip over 4 days. Coming back in Medford it happened again, same problem no power. No lights on the dash.
I'll ask for a detailed diagnosis on what the issue is. I suspect either a transmission or carbon build up problem. I hope it isn't carbon as I don't want to have to drive the snot out of it every time I drive it.
2 years and 19K miles later is kind of short for a repair like this. At least it should only be $50.
