Engine coolant is a "lifetime" affair?

Hey guys, I intended to drain/flush/refill our X6 with fresh coolant. While looking for the coolant capacity on Google, I ran across a statement that the coolant is good for the life of the vehicle. I've got 45k miles on ours, is it even worth replacing it?

Personally, I'm of the mindset where nothing is 'lifetime' when it comes to fluids.

I'll be changing my trans and coolant soon, because it's 8 or 9 year old fluid.

In my opinion, it's cheap preventative maintenance.

I also change my oil every 5-6k kms.

I think BMW is a little optimistic with their intervals and claims on fluids.

Thx to you both for your input. I think it's a bit soon for the coolant due to my mileage, but I also do frequent oil changes, 5k km. Tranny oil is supposedly a lifetime deal according to Toyota, but I replaced mine at 75k miles and it was blacker than the Ace of Spades

The lifetime thing is bullshit. Change your fluids at normal intervals or replace those components when their "lifetime" has expired.

While I agree lifetime is bullshit, I think changing it now is a bit premature. Besides there will be other opportunities to drain and refill coolant like replacing the water pump etc.

I would do it around 100k. Whatever you decide, it wont HURT to change it, as long as you have BMW branded stuff.

All you need is G48 Spec.... I used HEPU... but next time will use Zerex G48: https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/ZRX861583.

No need to pay BMW price for the same stuff...

Our pump was replaced a while back, so one more reason not to bother just yet. Thx to all for your input!!!

The Coolant should be done every 2-3 years regardless of mileage and inclusive of mileage. It will degrade over time and corrode coolant pathways in the block.

But it's your car, and your choice.

coolant ll be ok if engine has no problems, no problems with piping etc.. cause other than that it is closed circuit.. so its true.. changing it if you feel you want to will be choice..

My advise,

Coolant flush every 4 years
power steering flush every 3 years
Brake flush every 2 years
trans flush- never!

You had me right up to the tranny oil. And I know why. This is a hot topic and the subject of many an argument.

- If transmission oil is replaced relatively early (at anywhere between 50-75k miles), it's all good. change it out with no worries.

- if you wait 'till the tranny has over 100k miles and/or the tranny has had a hard life (towing etc), you risk slippage due to already-glazed clutch packs. The slippery new oil makes the clutch-grabbing even harder, so you get slippage.

- If your tranny is already slipping, then you have nothing to lose but a coupla hundred bucks if you change the oil. Remarkably, this has been a fix for some vehicles.

BTW, this info comes straight from the national service manager of Maaco transmissions. He has 25+ yrs of hands-on experience as an auto-stick tech.
