Yeah the subscription is stupid. I also heard it's VIN coded...so u can't use it between cars....not sure about that though.

I just got a new tailgate module, installed it. Wrote the VIN to it with Protool and bam! Works!

Love it

I've used the Carly on my X5M and on my coworker's M5.

I am new to this concept in tapping into your cars functions. What do you do with the Carly and or Protool on a consistent basis? I can see you using it once but then what purpose does it have in the long run?

You can code different features on the go, disable, etc.

Read codes

Code modules

Code battery, injectors....and a lot more.

View live data...

Things you would have otherwise have to take the car to the dealership for.

I previously had Carly and Schwaben scan tools. I liked the Carly but the fact that the bluetooth adapter became out of date and I would have had to buy another for $99 I decided to go to the Schwaben scanner. I think that thing is great and for computer idiots like me very user friendly. All I need to know is code information, fuel pump purge when I need to change out injectors and battery registration. It does all of those and then some and doesn't really allow you to screw anything up.

That's not bad.

The Protool is surprisingly very easy to use also.

If one were to get one of these tools, is there a kind of standard that everyone must do. ie if you have this tool the first thing you want to change is this? or if you have this tool everyone does this mod/code first?

The Schwaben scan tool is a Foxwell NT510 in a gray case. You can save a few bucks and upgrade at the same time by getting a Foxwell NT520.

I already have a DCAN cable and laptop with the software installed, but it's not exactly easy and convenient. I already have an Innova 3160G, but I've been really impressed with the feedback on the Foxwell NT520.

I just picked one up on eBay for $141.05 with free shipping. It's listed at $151.05, but the seller, eBay ID powerscan, is currently offering $10 off. On top of that, eBay is giving me $14.10 in eBay bucks on this purchase (a promotion that's running for a couple days), so my net cost is just $126.95. Couldn't pass that up!

I'll probably keep this one in the car so it's readily available any time.

If you're interested, here's a link to the eBay auction: https://www.ebay.com/itm/153213573803

ProTool is definitely the way to go. After this last update, it claims to be a full replacement for NCS Expert. And its not vin locked so you can use it on multiple cars.

Carly screwed themselves with the yearly subscription.

Good thread. I have the Carly app, bought it years ago so I got grandfathered in, so no yearly subscription fees for me. The Carly is good for what it is, pretty basic functions. Reading about the Protool now, looks nice.

Anyone know if I would be able to code an adaptive cornering headlight module with the Protool?

My passenger side adaptive headlight swivels the opposite way that it should. The adaptive cornering module was replaced before I bought the vehicle and I'm betting that it was not coded when installed.

Have not used NCS Expert before, was hoping this would be an alternative.

You can code the module but I’m not sure if that’s your issue or not. Find the Bimmergeeks protool Facebook group and ask there. Or email them. I’ve coded a couple of features but people there have a much better knowledge of what’s possible.
