New member (e71 x6m): Engine blown?!

Good morning everyone!

On Saturday afternoon, I purchased a used X6M (Colorado) to replace my Land Rover that unfortunately got totalled. I am a known member in Colorado as I own an E36 M3 sedan (with LS engine), Phoenix Yellow E46 M3, and E86 MCoupe (imported from middle East).

I decided it was time to try out the E71 as I've been destroyed by them on the track and I love the look.

Vehicle has 62,500 on the clock with what seemed to be regular maintenance and was a 1-owner (no upgrades, completely stock).

Less than 100 miles after purchase, on my way home on the highway at normal speeds, the vehicle goes into neutral and I get the dreaded "Engine malfunction" notification... I pull off to side of road, hoping to God that this is just a weird sensor issue (CPS, etc). I restart vehicle, it idles smoothly but has DSC, parking brake light and either transmission or CEL (not sure which). I limp vehicle to my house (~5 miles) and disconnect battery for 30 min. Restart vehicle and this time different earnings appear. DSC, brake light are still on but now it says "DSC and xDrive malfunction"

I go to store for basic code reader while I wait for new Foxwell. I pull codes. I don't yet have a BMW-specific code reader that works for the E71. Codes are below.

P0012
P052b
P0012
P10ed
P052b

On Sunday morning (80 total miles driven), I start car to see if I can hear any sounds. At 2-2200 rpm, I believe I am hearing the dreaded rod knock that I've heard many times before

As of now, the vehicle has been towed back to the dealership where I bought it. I did not purchase the warranty as I believed I knew enough about fixing vehicles that I could deal with any normal problem.

I have read through all of the recall threads, RB issues and timing chain failures/recalls on N54.

At this point, I am simply looking for advice from people who have been in the same situation (and to get a bit of sympathy haha).

Regards,
Adrian

The knocking doesn't sound good...if I ever heard anything out of order....I would have it hauled immediately to my indy if I was home...or to the nearest dealer if travelling...

My vehicle acted up last winter, do to a couple months in storage (all kinds of codes and limp mode)...changed the battery...all was well...been great all year...Good luck...Let us know how you make out...

Thank you much! It's definitely more than just a battery or alternator due to rpm-dependent knocking.

Does anybody know if the S63 has finally been approved by BMWNA recall program due to same timing chain as N54?

Wow, hopefully the dealer takes care of you properly on this one. Do they have in house techs to diagnose and repair if needed?
If you need to reach out to an indy shop, I can recommend the few to deal with here in Denver.

I appreciate the support. I will likely be reaching out to one of the following as I am close with all of them:
-Bimmerhaus
- AutoSport Weeks
- SCR performance

If you have other suggestions, please let me know.

At this time, I am being told that there was a DME issue wrt communication with the VANOS. They say that they have reprogrammed the DME and everything is good to go. I am in court all week as a juror so I won't be able to verify this until Sat. I plan on requesting that the dealer allow me to get another opinion from an Indy shop and having it blessed. Also going to ask if they will allow me to purchase the extended warranty (and if they will pay for half for my troubles).

I honestly HIGHLY doubt the sound I was hearing was in fact a DME issue. It sounded like rod knock....

Anyway, more to come!!!

Adrian

Sounds like you are more North side of town, but I would also suggest for bigger shops:
- Paddock Imports
- The Garage
- Yanzito Imports
Or smaller guys that are factory trained and building their businesses:
-European Motors (Austin)
-Euro Garage 303 (Zach)

from your description, I think your battery died and you may have a failed alternator. When your dash goes Christmas tree, its usually because of a bad battery and failed alternator. The sounds your hearing maybe a broken serpentine belt. Check those.

Bearing failures are extremely rare on this, unless the timing chain brakes or the injectors fail and you hyrdolock the engine. Has the car had the injector update?

Hello, I have a '13 X6 M 68K and yesterday it started making a knocking sound but almost sounds like an exhaust leak from #2. Do you have any audio of you issue prior to rebuild?

The same as an earlier reply I have heard a bottom end failed sound when the serpentine belt has a chunk missing. Sounds horrendous and much worse than a belt issue.

Maybe optimistic but worth a look
