Those with pure turbos

Gonna upgrade turbos as my waste gates are shot.

Who has what and why did you go with them?

I don’t plan on running anything higher than 600hp, and max 20psi boost.

Stage 1 $2750
Stage $4500.

I've got stage 2 running 22psi.

I got them just to hit higher power levels. They are capable of a lot more than the stock turbos.

Also, active Autoworke told me that stage 1 don't really last that long or hold up. So stage 2 is definitely the way to go.

Hmm, not looking for 800hp, just a good lasting turbo for 80k

I think I should be max at 600hp tops.

To touch 600 at the wheel you'll need stage 2.

Another alternative is using the F10 M5 turbos and turbo manifold.

Only draw back of the f10 setup on the e70 x5m is that the fuel system check will never pass. So if you need all systems ready to pass state inspection (like I do in NJ), then it's not a viable option. But if you live in a state that doesn't mind it....that's probably the best and most cost effective option.

I’m thinking of doing stage 1 turbos myself. Mainly because they are cheaper than stock slightly. I have an x5m and use it mostly to tow, and don’t want a tune or turbo that can’t handle sustained full throttle without the engine blowing up. I want reliability, and I’m constantly getting limp dick mode I mean reduced power mode when towing up hills and replaced everything except the turbos. Anyone try the stage 1 turbos with a light tune or stock tune? Better yet while towing?

Is it stage 1 won’t hold up under highly tuned situations or it’s just not a good turbo.

They (AA) told me that the stage 1 doesn't hold up when tuned. So it might be ok under stock conditions. You could get away with a solid 18psi tune to help your towing. That'll put you right at the 500-510whp mark.

For your reduced power mode...what codes come up?

I don't want to hijack this thread but I kind of am.... I'm looking at replacement turbos... I don't keep my X5M at home so I'm going from memory. The main code that keeps creeping up is the dreaded 30FF. I'll go out there and pull the actual codes later today. Cached in Carly is 2F29 charge air cooling energy operation, 2F24 same.

I've been chasing this issue for more than 2 years, which is why I think its probably time to replace the turbos (all that's left) or tune the car to make it less sensitive to boost pressures anomalies. My indy recommended a tune as one of the things tuners due is reduce the software sensitivity to achieving target boost pressures he claims. I have noticed sometimes bucking from the car at low speeds. Rare. I also sometimes notice a strong smell of gasoline in the exhaust when idling after towing and in high altitudes.

In my quest to fix this;
Its been to the dealer multiple times over the years (I have an extended warranty and they have mostly thrown parts at it).
I've had smoke tests done, vacuum leak, waste gate actuator, etc.
replaced;
Filtered Air Ducts
CCV entire system
Plugs
pneumatic pressure converters
diverter valves
all 4 map sensors
air filters
index 12 injectors were installed in 2017 as part of a recall.
probably some other things that didn't make a difference.
turbo coolant pump

ITs not reproducible except when towing in hot weather up hills when the car is under high sustained load while towing. Keeping it in 4th-5th gears helps some but last trip I made I triggered it 4-5 times. In the span of 300 miles, so annoying. You have like nearly 0 power, so I pull over turn it off, turn it back on and its cleared for a while. Till that next hill..

I've had tuned cars before, but I've resisted tuning this one mainly because I use it as my long trip/tow vehicle and was looking to keep reliability high.

This code sounds more like something to do with the intercoolers. Have you changed that auxiliary pump? Its the one that's on the left hand side in the bottom. Sounds like the intercoolers arent cooling the charged air to what the ECU expects. You can run an IAT monitor to see what it shows vs ambient temps.

I thInk I have had the aux water pump replaced. I’ll douBle check.

So the two codes I continue to get which trigger the reduced power mode while towing are;
30FF Boost pressure control, boost pressure too low
ambient pressure 925.0hpa
ambient temp 27.75C
number of revolutions 2240.0rpm
Pressure upstream from throttle bank 1 149.0kpa
310B boost pressure control 2, plausibility.

The other two didn't happen at the same time and were 1500km ago.

But given I've replaced about everything related to the turbo's except the turbos I'm guessing its them. Mechanic says try a tune, or maybe pure stage 1 and a tune? I just want reliable towing power, its very sad going up the Raton pass in new mexico at 25mph, pedal to the metal...... With flashers on of course in the right lane.

Well, there are three aux water pumps. One for the turbo...one for the intercoolers and the other for the main system.

So I verified. I had the auxiliary coolant pump for charge air cooler 2. Replaced. 11517584088. At least according to the dealer invoice. I had a lot done on that trip about 11k worth of work. Evan core, oil pan gaskets, aux pump, dmtl pump, tension struts, and etc.

The charge air issues I don’t believe is triggering the reduced power. As the error codes for charge air cooling happened several thousand miles ago 1x, and did not happen at the same time as the 30Ff. It’s still the 30FF/310B issue, which was triggered 4x in 300 miles causing reduced power. Ive had this 30ff/310b issue apparently since 2018 looking through past posts. IÂ’ve not dedicated much time as this is a highly occasional use only vehicle.

I did notice a mechanic dropped a rag in front of the radiator sitting on the bottom blocking some airflow through the intercooler radiator.

I still think itÂ’s turbo time for me, at 67k miles. At least one is marginal.

Ya you may as well try that considering all you've done already.

Pure turbos says 5-6 weeks for stage 1 or 2, neither is in stock and that is how long one takes to order. Wow.

Good to know. I was hoping to install the new turbos before thanksgiving. I’m going on a trip to Guadalupe Mountains National park and taking the trailer. So hoping to have the car fully sorted. I’ll shop and see if someone has them on the shelf somewhere.

I ordered my Stage 2 turbos October 8th. I hope to have them next Friday. Fingers crossed. Jimmy at pure turbos said that they make when the order is placed.

Jimmy was who I talked to as well.

Dawgz hows the lag? Any noticeable difference compared to stock turbos?

Last time I went big turbo, GTI to an APR Stage III Kit, man that think lagged so bad, but when it spooled...................... It was fast.

I didn't miss it one bit when I moved to my 335D.. Which also got modded.
