Spark Plug Recommendation
Hello,
I have been using the Bosch plugs for my 2012 X5 50i. Can anyone recommend a better option. Or should I go back to using the BMW branded plugs which is also a Bosch plug? Thanks |

If your running the stock tune, Bosch plugs are fine and identified to BMW plugs where you are just paying for the logo. Go with NGK 2 step colder if your running a stage 2+ tune or jb4. As other member mentioned, for coils Eldor can't be beat. Coils are a weak spot on th n63/s63 platform. If you're over 80k miles I highly recommend you replace them now as preventative maintenance before you start getting drivetrain malfunction errors. FCP Euro usually has some pretty good deals on them as well as the plugs.

I second that the Bosch plugs have been just fine for me on my S63 and N63TU vehicles. Both are stock and not tuned.
I've got about 80K miles on my N63TU no coil pack failures and 67K on my S63 with no coil pack failures. The odds of a failure on these packs goes up if your gap is too large and / or if tuned and age. But I think about changing them on the X5M which is now 11 years old, with the original coil packs. Also you do need a special socket to change the plugs, a thin walled one if you haven't done it. I'd also get a gap tool as I find even from the factory they are often highly variable in the gap. finally a set of various extensions and some joints is highly helpful. |

I just replaced all coils and plugs at 100K on my X5M. 6 coils were original; one replaced before I bought the car, and one by me due to a cracked boot which caused an eng. failsafe under heavy throttle. Heat is the #1 enemy of coil packs and we all know the S63 is a blazing inferno.
Current ETK lists Eldor coils for S63. I always recommend genuine plugs as BMW specs a high standard from the suppliers (avoids warranty claims and comebacks). Torque is light on them! 23Nm and DO NOT GAP. I used a 1990's Craftsman 12 point socket with no issue. Last edited by iansanderson; 11-18-2021 at 10:13 AM.. |
