E70 X5M - Oil Filter Cap: Did I Get Ripped Off?

During my last oil change (at a BMW dealer), they told me someone installed the wrong oil filter cap, or broke it during a previous oil change (they weren't sure which).

So they special ordered me the correct part, which is part # 11 42 7 615 389 for $100, and went ahead and did the oil change.

I already know that I overpaid for this.

They told me that the oil filter cap that I am using doesn't have that circular metal component in it - or it was broken - they weren't sure which.

Can someone educate me? What does that circular metal component in it do? It appears to be spring mounted.

So, what is the risk of it being broken? (I have the oil filter cap now, but it's not installed yet). Should I install it right now, even though I just had an oil change? I was thinking about waiting until my next oil change to have it installed. Did they reccomend that I buy this thing at 2X the normal price for no reason ?

I asked the service rep the same questions, but all she could tell me was that it regulated pressure oil and that it's bad that it isn't working.

First of all $100 for the cap IS definitely a ripoff.
These cover are just that, filter covers. Your oil pressure have a thermostat separately.
That part you circled on the filter cover is just to snap the filter on to the cover to lock in place. It swivels around normally.
Changing the oil filter cap/cover does not require you to change your oil. Just top off what went out.
Did i say you got ripped off big time?

The metal part is important. They are frequently broke by lube shops and yes, it is important so the engine isn't starved during startup and also directs oil flow through the filter
