Memorial Day weekend

Thank you everyone for your service and the ones who unfortunately did not make it back.

What is MDW like in your part of the country?
In NJ it was the start of everything.
-moving into summer houses down the shore
-spring cleaning around the yard
-going to the beach every weekend
-Bar-B-Ques
-Festivities outside in the park
-Parades
When I moved to Florida MDW seemed like "just another weekend" that didn't have that celebratory aspect to it. I'm just curious if other locales make a big deal out of it as a whole (Not you individually)

Everything we did revolved around major festivities from MDW to LDW. By no means is this post meant to trivialize the real meaning of the Holiday.

I agree. It’s the official start of summer. You can also grill for the first time all year which is a big deal

What stopped you from grilling last weekend? Back in March? Is it an HOA restriction? Do the grill police come and arrest you for operating a grill out of season?????

Do you normally grill in the winter? We don't. Only in the summer. Same reason why people don't drive their nice cars in the winter...some things are better left for the time of the year.

This reminds me of the first time I grilled during the winter. It was 0°F out, and I thought the burgers would take longer because it was so cold. That turned out to be incorrect thinking.

No, I simply used the same timings I used in the spring, summer, and fall.

When I was a kid, my folks always took us camping several times every summer. MDW was the first trip every year. I remember swimming in the pool at the base of Sabbaday Falls in NH one MDW. It was warm enough outside to swim, but that water was ice cold. You'd get muscle cramps in minutes. Then it was a week around the 4th of July, then maybe another week in August. And finally LDW. Sometimes we'd do Columbus Day weekend, but not always. I used to love camping. Now I want a comfy bed in a quiet room.

I’m jelly. My youngest is going to Yosemite tomorrow. Camping on some owners land outside the park

GIL asked me tonight what she needed to take: hot dogs, grahams, marshmallows and Hershey. What else could you possibly need???

I’m thinking I go to the local butcher shop and pay a ridiculous price for some ground ribeye burgers

My DW has been out in the falling snow on numerous occasions grilling dinner. She prefers the grill over stinking up the kitchen with certain foods.

FWIW, gas grills work just fine in sub-freezing temperatures.....

Never heard of not grilling AT ALL in the winter. Is it some unwritten rule? A faux pas? My family grills whenever we are craving a food that needs to be prepped that way. In fact, we grill hot dogs every NYE. It’s colder and more inconvenient, and sure it happens less frequently than during summer but do people seriously close shop completely just because”it’s winter”? I didn’t realize it’s the first time I can grill all year and that it’s apparently a big deal. Never was before today. The stuff I learn here is beyond comprehension.

I BBQ all year round.
I'm not going outside to BBQ when it's freezing cold, but I've shoveled the snow on my way to the BBQ on several occasions.

Pay homage to a vet when you have the chance and be safe this weekend as we know it's the start of the 101 days of craziness we call summer.

Nowadays when you move somewhere new it's up to you to create a new community around you with lots of intentionality. Especially in a place like Florida that gets droves of tourists and new transplants from other states.

We usually go to our house in the mountains or BBQ here with neighbors.

So you go to BBQ's in the winter months? Your friends are having people over to grill in December? I'm not sure what's beyond comprehension about my post...most people begin the grilling season this weekend and it runs thru September.

I don’t really go to friends for BBQs ever, but my entire family gets together and we BBQ during winter months. Anyway you walked into that one, not only can we BBQ in the winter, some of us do, and there’s nothing special about it. It’ll probably blow your mind but some of us eat ice cream throughout the winter, even outside when it’s snowing.
