Park Distance control
Hey guys,
Happy new year! This warning came up the other day. I assume its nothing critical, but thought this group might have an idea how to fix it, instead of paying someone to take a look at it. Any idea how I can reset this? Thanks! |

Same thing happens to mine for a while now. Usually when it rains a lot or going through the car wash triggers it. Then after a few days, it works fine again. I'm guessing it's water getting into some connection.

Take it to a shop (or do it yourself if you have software) and they should be able to pinpoint which sensor it is thats causing the problem. Im not sure of any way to get around it besides either replacing the sensor or just hitting 'ok' and moving on.

That warning means one of the sensors is bad...if you can figure out which sensor is bad they are pretty easy to replace.
You should be able to figure it out by having someone put it in reverse (with parking brake on!), then putting your finger over each sensor. If it's working, you will feel a faint pulsing. If you don't need painted sensors (the unpainted ones are black), you can get them on eBay for like $35 for 6, just search for the part number (it was 9139868 for a 2011 x5...but confirm on RealOEM to make sure). They are cheap enough the you could replace all of them if you can't figure out which one. |

I recommend instead of putting the vehicle in reverse (to initiate PDC)...you can also initiate PDC by just pressing the button. This way the vehicle will be in PARK...and you can still set the parking brake for extra protection (if you want)...especially if no one will be inside the car with their foot on the brake. Then proceed to each sensor to see which one may have failed. If memory serves me correct...I believe you can also put your ear up to the sensors to see if they are making a clicking sound. If it's clicking, the sensor is OK...if it's not clicking, then you've found your culprit. If you have or know someone that has a stethoscope...even better! But again, a simple google search should reveal what many BMW owners in the past have done in this situation to diagnose which PDC sensor has given up the ghost. Good luck.

Can confirm that the sensors will be making a faint clicking noise if functioning properly. Had to diagnose a failed parking sensor in a friend's Land Rover recently and the "click test" is how we pinpointed the bad one.

Bumping this thread. Anyone know if you can replace the front center sensors without removing the bumper?

Couple notes in my thread on bumper removal.
https://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...php?p=24437298 It's not as hard as I thought.

PDC Malfunction
I get the same PDC malfunction error. None of the sensors produce a clicking sound. Since it's a 2012 there is no separate PDC control unit anymore and it is a part of the JBE unit. I don't think JBE is the culprit as other things in the car are running without an issue. Tried Carly and it gives me the following under voltage fault code. What are my options? This is the only failure code that carly can find.

I am currently having the same problem with my car so i did a bit of digging in, i took apart the pdc connector on the jbe and made sure there was power and ground to the sensor and there was. Next i back probed each sensor wire and i was getting readings back but i noticed that my sensors are not clicking. Swapped with a used jbe from a different car and still no luck so i put my old one back in. I looked up the error code on ista and it says short circuit terminal 30 between power and ground of pdc supply and ground. But i did all these test with a multimeter and couldn't find any short circuits. Each sensor has 3 wires, power, ground and return signal. When i supply power and ground to the sensors they give back some kinda of number reading on the multimeter and all the sensors return back the same reading even tho i put boxes closes to some of the sensors but none of the sensors click unless I'm looking for the wrong click, idk how to tell the click because I've never tested a pdc sensor before. Did i get so unlucky that all my sensors went out. But see here is the thing i bought 2 new amazon special cheap $15 sensors and put them in but still have the issue. So are the 2 new sensors broken or is there something else going on here, don't think its the jbe module because everything else works. Another catch, when the pdc issue started , all the sensor would work crazy like red green non stop as if there is something there then i got these error once in a while then a month later the error become permanent. Someone help please. Last thing i can think of is bite the bullet and buy 8 new oem sensors. If that doesn't fix the issue I'm driving this pos off the cliff

PDC issue with BMW
I encountered the same problem and found the best advice online that helped with identifying and fixing the issue. When you use the Bimmerlink it will pinpoint the exact sensor that has short circuited. Most times you need to replace that sensor because it has gone bad. I am not sure why they go bad but it could be anything ranging from water seepage into the wiring that causes the short circuiting.

Just an FYI, but when I had the same error my problem ended up not being the sensor but one of the wires in the harness that connected to the sensor. Protool told me it was the sensor but after replacing it,it still wouldn’t work. I had the shop pull my bumper off and they discovered the frayed wire. Once they fixed that, everything worked perfectly again.
