Oil Change on 2010 X5M. fluid black right away?
Hey all! I took my X5 M E70 in to the mechanic to get an oil change, before seeing this thread. And, I realized that the mechanic could actually scam you out of an oil change, since there's no dipstick to check right away if the oil's clean or not. So, 4 days after the oil change, I got nervous, so I found the oil drain plug underneath, and drained a very small amount onto a white egg container(which works perfectly as I can compare the color). The oil to my surprise was very dark brown, almost black! Did I get scammed? Or is the oil supposed to get black right away (4 days later). They supposedly put in a new filter and 8.5 Liters of new synthetic oil. The motor is a 4.4L twin turbo gasoline, NOT diesel. I know I should have checked it right away, but my other car which has a 2L turbo engine, doesn't get black within 4 days. Thanks!

Ok. Cool, thanks guys. Yep, some expensive eggs they were! But, those are diesel aren't they? I know that diesel goes black right away, but gasoline engines?

My diesel has been deleted shouldn’t go black anyway. It still went black after I drove home from my shop

How long was it prior to this past oil change? If there was gunk build up it could be cleaning out. I'd get another change done

This is perfectly normal and there’s no reason for alarm. Oil changes color extremely fast due to a number of reasons, most of it in part of heat cycles and soot.
Changing oil because of color coincides with the myth that it must be dirty/old oil. If you want to change the oil go right ahead but after that oil change I’d be a betting man your “New” oil with be the same color in the same time period if using the same oil. |

If you are really concerned, get a test kit and send it off for analysis. You will get all of the info you could ever want on your oil, and a baseline, so that next change you can do it again and see how your oil is performing, and get a good idea of the overall condition of the engine internally.
