Sorry to see that. Could you provide some information such as mileage, routine oil change intervals? Original owner? Thanks.

That’s weird how both bearings were shot. Looks as if the oil spraying nozzle to the front was clogged. Did you check the oil sprayer?

Does not bother me at all. With all of them on the road and less than a handful mentioned here. Lexus, Mercedes, Audi, Honda, Corvettes, all have engine failures. I like to get the history of the vehicles before placing judgment. I know of a Q50s engine failure at around 50k miles. Come to find out, not a single oil change.... I knew of a Lexus GS motor premature failure, flooring it everyday when the engine was still cold.....Just goes on and on. I look for patterns. If there were 15 threads about the same failure, then I would be selling.

I was not the original owner so don't know the past history. I've had it for less than a yr and has around 60k miles.

I should have serviced the bearings as preventative but didn't get to it yet and wasn't doing oil analysis.

Be damn sure I'll be doing it religiously now.

I had just changed oil maybe 3wks prior to the bearing failure - levels were fine and I didn't notice any glittering.

I think it's prudent to do oil changes on these motors every 4-5k.

Very similar situation to mine. Out of curiosity what oil did you use when you did the change 3wks before the failure?

Thanks. I was also running 5W30, though I got the oil from BMW so it was their own brand. Since the failure I've done a lot of research and questioning on what the best oil is for these S63 engines and I am beginning to think 5w30 is just too light weight and at least part of the reason for the failure. I know my engine had the exact amount of oil it was supposed to have(I checked it the day before), so it wasn't running low.

I know there's been quite a bit of debate on what oil to use and I don't want to derail this thread too much, but I think I'm going to switch over to 5W50 oil when I get my engine back from Ghassan.

100% agree. I've always kept to the 5K routine with all my BMWs and have never had major engine issues... Until the X5M, which had only had 9 oil changes over the course of 95K miles before I brought it home.

Wow...I can't believe people even go past 7k on oil changes.

I wish you can set a remainder or alert on the iDrive for every xx mileage before oil change needs to be done. Are the new F gen like that?

I've always just gone every 5K at 5, 10, 15, 20... It's always easier to remember and notice.

Yea that would definitely be nice.

I just keep a running tab of every oil change in the notepad on my phone and glance at it every once in a while for a reminder.

So you think a thicker oil would be better? The gap tolerances on the bearings are so limited, thicker may not get enough fluid in between...thoughts?

Like my 2009 Acura RDX tells me.. oil life 15%, 10%, 5%, Service now!

If only the idrive had something like that it would be great to bring it in for service but yeah keeping a tab works too...just more work

That's what I'm thinking, but I'm not sold on the idea completely. I know Troy Jeup, who's a respected engine rebuilder that specializes in M engines recommends going with a 5/50 oil and racing thermostat. It'll take longer for the temps to get up enough to run the car hard, but once it's up I think it may be safer.

That said, I'm totally open to any thoughts. I obviously want my freshly built engine to last, so I don't want to do anything that might jeopardize that.

From the looks of your bearings, the likely cause of damage was misassembly, and the bearings were possibly not positioned correctly to have their lubrication hole to allow oil in, and they received no lubrication.

This wouldn't be fixed with more frequent oil changes.

Another thing to keep in mind is that these fuel injectors can fail and be leaking fuel while engine is off( aka leaky injectors). Fuel dilution in the oil can cause lubricity to as good as water. One more thing to add to the list.

The old injectors or the ones from the recall?
