Self leveling H&R install problem! Please help!

I bought the H&R kit with the 1.2 springs in the front and the 1.0 links for the rear self leveling on my 2013 X5 m sport and I'm at my mechanics but we cannot get the ride height correct. The left is sitting way lower than the right side. Double checked the links and they are at 67mm. Please help!

If you have self leveling suspension, could it be possible that the airbag is malfunctioning? I'm probably wrong.

Of the links are set correctly it's probably your airbags. How many miles do you have on them? Also do an air suspension leak test to see if any of the lines are leaking etc. get arnott airbags if you need to change them.

If you have the rear air suspension

If one of the air bags has gone you will here the compressor kick in as these things have sensors to level suspension i'm pretty sure, if the compressor works repeatedly after you start your car probably is the air bag has a leak. Best bet getting it changed as it will continue to slave your compressor and them things ain't cheap.

Airbags were replaced about 5 months ago and still hold air. Couldn't even change the value in calibration in the computer. It Just kept saying the " 5FB4 control unit internal failure". Now it's sitting with the left side low as hell and the right side is regular ride height.

A friend of mine was a BMW tech for years and he's guessing based off of what I've told him, that, the module is probably shot 😩🔫. That's just my luck of so. I don't even wanna think about him much that's gonna cost. Anyone ever replaced one? The guy at ecs I spoke with yesterday has never encountered this issue and was stumped too. He said if I wanted to, he would send me a return shipping label to return the kit I bought and swap it out for the 4 spring, 1.2 lowering H&R kit for the without self leveling suspension and just do old school 4 springs and get rid of the air suspension all together. Even swap so I won't lose any money which is super nice of them to offer. I've had springs on all my previous vehicles and honestly I'm thinking about going that route. Cheaper and ya, I'll have a self leveling code, but at least I don't have to deal with the self leveling module issues and blowing extra money.

So yesterday my mechanic reset the air suspension computer and initially it worked perfect and set the rear at the perfect ride height; but as soon as I drove down the street, it stopped back down on the left side. Bags are good. I just don't get it.

My tech friend also mentioned that maybe it could be the level sensors..? Said that even if thy are screwed up a little bit that they won't work correctly. He thought that maybe if I took it to my local bmw shop, that they may be able to wipe the module and code it?...? Anyone have any other thoughts on this? It's killing me.

Ya that did make sense. Which is the correct way they should they be facing? I appreciate the help btw.

I'm not sure it applies here. I was thinking about my e46 headlight sensor arms and thought it could be similar. The E70 sensors look like they prevent that...but maybe the shorter arms it can still happen.

Cool cool. I'll have to check tomorrow since I left it at my mechanics shop, but, for some reason I feel like they are, but who knows, it'll be a godsend if that's the issue 🙏🏼. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for the thoughts brotha.

Dont think that makes any sense. The arms, even if installed the other way around will work the same. This is the small adjustable arms we are talking about that come with the H&R springs for the rear.

When I did the suspension on my E46 I unscrewed the headlight level arm...when I reattached it I put it on with the arm facing the wrong direction. This caused a malfunction. The E70 sensors have the opposite side of the sensor close to the subframe so I'm not sure if the same thing is possible as I said in my second post. The error would look like the below picture with the sensor arm in yellow and the adjustable arm in green.

Yes, i got what you were saying in your other post....still don't think its possible to put them back the wrong way. its too easy to get this right.

The E46 is a different story....I have an M3 and ive made that mistake for 2 seconds.

Yep, It does seem unlikely. OP, the sensors have the same part numbers...maybe try swapping the sensors from either side and see if it changes the affected side. You can clean the electrical contacts while your at it. Look for a bent bracket too, but the code pretty much rules out anything like that. Might still end up being the module though.

Sensors appear to be facing the correct way. I asked my mechanic to see if he could switch them if he had time today.

Have any luck yet? I would have your mechanic use ISTA to do a simple height calibration. If you need to know the exact steps I can go through it, it's incredibly simple. I just did mine the other day when I had the left side sitting an inch low. This happened when I swapped the ride height sensors. Any time you mess with those they should be calibrated.

Only thing is that since you're lowered, when it asks for your measurements on both sides, you'll want to add your lowered amount to the measurement. Otherwise computer will think it's too low and try to raise it up. So if you're measurement is 675mm from bottom of rim to the fender arch, then you'll want to input 700mm(adding 25mm which is an inch) into the computer.

Just spoke with him and he did not use ITSA; he tried using 'Snap on Zeus'. We did do the measurements with that computer and ttied to adjust, but to no avail. Its still sitting low af on the left and high on the right. Its been quite frustrating since all the research I did before leaned towards a straight forward and easy swap. Do you think I should try switching the sensors left to right and vice versa? I think someone else mentioned that idea in a previous post. At this point I wish I would have just gotten the 4 spring H7R kit to eliminate the self leveleing rear bags and just driven with the 'Self leveling malfunction' code.
