Dealership said Possibly replace my engine on 2013 X5 50I from a Oil Problem N63
SO I brought my 2013 X5 50I to the dealership today. I posted in another thread that I needed an oil change , rattling noise in the front, and had 2 reduce engine failures in the last month while getting in the highway. I bought it in 2016 with 32K miles and just hit 60K. They said there is a bulletin for X5 50I that there is an excessive oil consumption problem with those engines. They put in on a lift and found multiple oil leaks. She said I am the first one to bring in this X5 with this issue, but there is a possibility that the engine might need to be replaced. She said they would replace it, but I MIGHT need to pay for some of it. I said Why would I have to pay for anything if it is an issue BMW knew about and need to replace the engine?? She is not sure since I am the first she has come across. She will see what she can do. I can't believe it. Has anyone come across this?
I just found this- https://bimmerlife.com/2018/10/20/bm...ption-lawsuit/ |

so nothing new here. People have been getting their engines replaced for years now. However what would be new to you is, there's supposedly several months waiting period for BMW to get the engine in. I hope I am wrong but that's all I have read and I know.

I just did all the research last night. What a nightmare. I am 200 miles under 60K miles and saw that I pay the minimum. I don't see why anyone should pay for an engine that is defective. I might just get rid of it and call it quits on BMW.

Get it fixed and then get rid of it. I just bought a 2012 X5M with 39K miles but then I also bought an extended warranty 5/60K to have a peace of mind toO. In my mind, there's nothing out there that touches an X5M aesthetically or performance wise.
What I don't know is, how long my love affair with this babe last though I bought it knowing all the issues, not with the S63 as much but I had to scratch the itch of owning one though |

I have been waiting about three months now. Does not bother me if it takes a year. I am driving a rental that BMW pays for and not accumulating any mileage on my own vehicles. I'll gladly pay the 15% of new engine cost.

Is that what they said? 15%? How many miles do you have?

69,850 miles. There is a chart somewhere on this site of miles on the odo and the percentage you will pay based on the Bang settlement. Had it been 70K-80K, I believe the percentage I would pay is 30-35% (of retail engine cost).

Here is an update. BMW is covering: valve seals, oil separators, turbocharger oil return pipes, return cover and gaskets, rear crankshaft seal and rear engine cover.
They said it is about $15K worth of repairs and labor that they are completely covering. They said no to a new engine. I am glad they are. Is it worth keeping this 2013 X5? I barely drive it and feel like I will always worry in the back of my mind. I want to try a newer X5 40 non turbo, are they reliable? I have to believe BMW is better than this. Maybe I need to look at some other SUVs. |

The new 40i is a twin-turbo I6 motor. There hasn't been a non-turbo gas engine available in the X5 in North America since 2010. And those things are 60K base with zero options, 75K-80K optioned nicely. It'll be way cheaper to keep fixing your 50i than buy one of those. |

Thanks. I do love the power. That is why I got it. I might keep it for a while a see how she runs. I barely drive it and feel like it would be a waste of money to buy another SUV. I would end up buy another used one with low miles. Who knows what problems it will have.

So.... I got her back after 8 days. They didn't replace the engine, but did the following-
BMW is covering: valve seals, oil separators, turbocharger oil return pipes, return cover and gaskets, rear crankshaft seal and rear engine cover. They said it was close to $15K in parts and labor. Who knows. I have to say I MISS the power of the V8! I got a 530I as a loaner and was really disappointed. The inside was nice, but I felt it was slow and had some turbo lag. Maybe I am used to driving mine for so long. I am going to stick it out for a while. After driving it today and I remember why I bought it in the first place. Hopefully, she won't give me any problems. |
