The factory radio is a POS
I swear the Germans apparently don't care about radio. My radio constantly shuts down at random. At least 2-3 times a week. Been trying to add music to hard drive. Could never get USB to work so I am installing via CD. Some days i recognizes a cd and some days it doesn't. Some days it plays music from hard drive some days it doesn't. gRrr

Sounds like the hard drive on your CIC may be going out.

Had the (basic) radio in our 2008 328 sometimes refuse to turn on when it was new. They finally replaced the head unit under warranty. Wierd thing is it did it about 2 more times after that, but then has been fine for 9 years. Go figure.
Machines, they should perform the exact same way every time. Add in electronics, and Nope. |

Stole this from another BMW page. Can anyone tell me a different hard drive to get or give me the specs so I can go online and do this upgrade. The one linked in article is Out of Stock. I am not computer geeky enough to know what these items are in a way I can search and make sure I buy one that will work for the task at hand
What you need - 128GB ATA-6 / PATA SSD - I got ZHEINO SDD of eBay for $92 shipped - ATA-6 / PATA to USB adapter https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=841458

So I went ahead and did this mod, and used the hard drive that was listed. I took it to my local guy and he cloned the hard drive, but when I reinstalled the hard drive it didn't work. We decided to buy the $50 software ( he split it with me) and re-cloned old Toshiba hard drive to new one. reinstalled it and did a hard reset (hold down the volume/mute bottom till radio reboots) and then it worked. Definitely an improvement of overall speed up with music from hard drive and Nav.
