A storm is coming
First year X5 driver and I've searched and read about this SUV in snow with summer tires, well I don't plan to buy winter tires especially for this winter and there is a snow storm coming our way tomorrow. I plan to test this truck in snow (3.5 with sports package and Bridgestone 255/50/19 sports tires, it still puzzles me why people say it's scary to drive this SUV in snow without winters. Dont get me wrong I'm not saying it should drive like a Russian tanker but I've driven 325i (non xdrive) in snow with summers and even though it was not fun, I was okay with a lot of caution.
Any thoughts or advice?????? Shot . |

A 325 weighs considerably less than an X5. That much more mass in motion without adequate friction/grip...well, you know that's basic physics. I am glad you won't be behind or beside me.

I get the physics part but don't worry about me, worry about the guy next to you who is driving with winters and doing 60 mph like its 80 degrees outside. I will be driving slowly with caution . |

Don't hit the brakes ... just keep moving ... something will stop you.
On second thought, stay indoors, make yourself useful and help with the turkey meal ...

ANY car with summer tires in the snow will end up beached, no matter the traction control capabilities. The compound of the tire isn't made for anything below a certain temp - which is well above freezing. Good luck with your repair bill.

I won't make any snide comments since that won't help you. Consider a second set of winter wheels/tires. In March, I found a used set on Craig's List for $1000 (replica 214s with almost new Pirelli Scorpions). Deals are out there, although the timing isn't good right now since demand will be higher. If you must drive with your current setup, drive with more caution than usual, allowing more than usual space in front of you to stop. The shallower tread, combined with the harder compound of your tires provide less grip all around. While AWD, weight and driver aids are nice to have, ultimately, traction is fully dependent on tire grip.

Yea and you're one of those that think because you have an awd suv you don't need winter tires and summers will do just fine. Either buy all seasons or winters or don't drive it at all, don't cheap out on safety.

Finally a word of reason....will definitely look for a deal after the season. The key to driving in snow is caution and a ship load of patience.... |

No, I'm one of those that will drive with caution and patience in snow with summers and not aggressive cos I got winters which I think is a bigger issue. |

If you have Bridgestones that are 255/50/19 at all 4 corners you do NOT have summer tires. They are all season/runflat HL 400s likely.
If you have those, you will be fine. Not great, but fine. |

FWIW, I'd get a second set of wheels with a good set of winter tires. Your summer tires are going to be like cue balls once the temps go below freezing. GL! |

Yes, I have Bridgestone 255/50/19 at all corners, in doing my research I thought they were performance summer tires because they sports. Are they the original tires that come with car? If they all weather then you right I should be okay . I assumed I have these http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....y&autoModClar= Last edited by boogakb24; 11-25-2014 at 04:31 PM.. |

I'd look at your tires and determine what you have. Best to not assume. |

Last winter I made the mistake of going out in my 335i (this is before I owned the X5) in what seemed like very light snow. Went to dinner, it kept coming down but wasn't more than 1/2" deep. I thought I'd be fine for the short drive home on my 19" Conti DW tires. Not. Even. A little bit. Driving on the flat road was fine, but as soon as I tried to go up the slightest incline I was sliding all over the place and I'm lucky as hell I didn't hit a parked car. Yes, I was driving extremely cautiously and slowly, didn't make a difference on summer tires. Obviously you'll fare better in an AWD vehicle, but that'll be the last time I venture out in snow without snow tires, even in my X5.
