N55 Engine Replacement

Hey Guys,

I have a 2011 E70 and the engine is toast at 128k miles. It failed while driving. It had one previous owner and had been well maintained so I am not sure what happened. The car shifted to Neutral and RPMs dropped to zero when it failed. I got it to a dealership and the engine was seized. Will not turn.

Anyways...I have an N55 with 75k miles that I am going to put into the car. My questions is: should I take any preventative measures with the donor engine before having it installed? Should I replace the road bearings and if so, what would you recommend?

I appreciate any advice and input.

Thank you!

Skip a used engine and go rebuilt from Ghassan. We lost the engine in our 535xiT at 120k from a failed injector, 75k $2000 engine and $800 parts/labor later and this one has spun a bearing. I wish I had listened to the voice in my head and spent $3500 on a rebuilt engine vs $2800 total on one that didn't even last 10k.

I thought BMW had these new N55 engines at $5000, wrong?

2012 E70 N55 B30 engine failure

Like you - my 2012 BMW X5 3.5i lost an engine in a similar fashion. I had driven 160 miles and pulled in for a 5 minute rest stop. Upon leaving I merged into a line of traffic on the highway, then changed lanes and had to floor it due to mis judging the speed of the car coming up behind me. After full acceleration I found the car had shifted to neutral and no rpm. Luckily I could coast to the side of the road. Mechanic now tells me a locked cam shaft. (can't manually turn the crank, no oil in the coolant, no coolant in the oil). Had just replaced valve cover gasket and oil filter cover gasket and water control valves, days/weeks before the incident. Cause remains a mystery. Thoughts.
