How much to replace transfer case?

Found a mint 2013 X5. Well taken care of, no accidents, 1 owner. However it has the DSC and Xdrive Malfunction on the dash.

I know this can be as simple as they changed the battery and didn't register it. Or it could be the steering angle sensor.

However it can also be the actual transfer case. So worst case scenario, how much would it cost to get the TC replaced?

They have them in junkyards for $500 however I don't know if a simple swap will do or does it require some programming.

I think this vehicle has the newer ATC45L

In my experience, it could be as high as $6000-7000 at the dealer and 1500 to 4000 at Indy shops (parts and labor) depending on the quality of the part. They are supposedly all rebuilt parts if you get them through BMW, or manufacturers that provide a warranty. The risk with a junkyard part is not knowing the quality. I don’t know about the programming.

If the swapping is simple then the programming should barely be a consideration. All that is required is telling ista that it has been replaced.

How difficult is this to remove? I cant find any DIY guides out there how to remove the TC only how to change the fluid. Anyone know the labour hours for RR?

That was kind of my joke. No idea about DIYs but the rough steps are: remove exhaust (model dependent), remove drive shafts, remove TC cross member, remove TC (it is bolted directly to the transmission), then reverse. I can see a shop charging 8-12 hours of labor for this job. Not that it would take them that long...
