Jake's M-Sport X5 35i Build Thread

Longtime N54 fanboy checking in (see: my 135i build thread). With shame and excitement, I've recently bought my first N55-powered vehicle. I'm ready for this slight uptick in reliability.

For the past month, I've been searching nationwide for what I consider the "perfect" E70 X5. That criteria included the following:
  • Had to be the 35i (N55) instead of the 50i (N63, very unreliable)
  • Had to have M-Sport Package (///M body kit, interior trim, etc.)
  • Had to have Cold Weather Package (heated front and rear seats, etc.)
  • Had to have Convenience Package (keyless entry/start, rear view camera, etc.)
  • Had to have Technology Package (heads-up display, side view cameras, etc.)
  • Had to have a heated steering wheel
  • Had to have paddle shifters
  • Had to be a 2013 (because LCI and this was the only year you could get M-Sport, heated steering wheel & paddle shifters together)
  • Couldn't be silver, bronze or brown
  • Couldn't have white or gray interior
  • Couldn't have any reported accidents
  • Mileage and location didn't matter
  • Budget was $25k after travel, taxes, registration, etc.

Eventually jiggz shared a link to a Carbon Black X5 at a random Ford dealership in the middle of nowhere, Missouri. They had a single-owner 2013 X5 35i that met all of my criteria. I inquired and found out that it was on consignment through the dealership. The owner of the dealership was trying to help sell his best friend's wife's car. After running the VIN, I found it also had premium sound, soft-close doors and front/rear PDC.

I arranged a quick 3rd party inspection through LemonSquad for $200. The inspection report came back good, so I got a quote for transportation through a friend of a friend on Facebook (Tri-Logistics). $1,000 delivered to my door in an enclosed trailer? Sure. I arranged for pickup on Monday and he delivered it to my house at 11:30pm the same day! I didn't expect such a huge truck and trailer to show up at my house, I should've told him I was the guy waiting for the white Lambo

He unloaded it and went on his way. I drove it for the first time yesterday and it's everything I was hoping it'd be. I couldn't be happier with the way it turned out.

Now, let the modding begin!

Nice find. I looked at one of those in my neck of the woods but it had 3rd row and I couldn't get around that as I wanted the under floor storage.
What's your plan for mods?

Yeah, I didn't want 3rd row either. A lot of the loaded M-Sport X5s have it too, unfortunately for us.

I just ordered some gloss black grilles, paint matched front reflectors, LED fog lights and LED interior lights. More to come.

I bought a pair of PIAA fog lights with the cut off etc. I get a bulb out error that my Carly can't seem to get rid of.
Whose reflector deletes did you find/get? I've been toying with the idea of removing them front and rear, sanding them a lil, primer and finding a paint matched aerosol.
Look into the BMS air filter (I think a new one was for sale on here) and the stage 1+ box, really woke my car up

Haha, it sure looked like a lot of fun over there! I wish we would've, but didn't have the time.

Interesting, I just bought some generic LEDs that I've used in other BMW fog housings in the past without an issue. Carly has always been able to eliminate the error for me. I'll report back on my results.

I got the painted reflectors from M o d b a r g a i n s (replace the asterisks, not sure why it's censored) http://www.**********s.com/BMW-E70-X...Reflectors.htm

I couldn't find anyone that sells paint-matched rear reflectors. Do you know of a vendor that does? Otherwise I'll resort to painting them eventually like you've mentioned.

Air filter is on the list, for noise. I wish I could MHD flash it quickly, but this has the ECU that needs to be removed and bench flashed. Performance isn't a huge concern for me, but I do like tinkering with stuff. I have my 800HP 135i if I ever want to go fast.

IND sells paint matched reflectors but im not sure if they have it in your model. Check out their website or email if its not there they might be able to do a custom job for you.

X5 looks great Jake! Glad you started a build thread, we need more of these on the E70 forum.

iND sells the painted front and rear reflectors, that's where I purchased mine from. The rears are super easy to swap on the M Sport - you can reach up from the underside and release the clips on the OEM red reflectors.

Great - thanks for the link! I will probably pick up a set of painted rear reflectors in the near future. The front ones bother me the most.

Haha, thanks for the warm welcome and the support! I've been slacking on the YouTube uploads, but hope to pick up again soon now that I've added the X5 to the garage. I'll be sure to continuously update this thread as well.

I would like to drop it on some 22s in the future. Sounds like the H&R 1.2" springs are a good option. Need to figure out which kit to get, I'm not sure if I have the air suspension or not.

Thanks Ryan! Modbrgn's was $20 cheaper, so I doubt they're reselling them from IND. Probably just spraying them in house as well. I'll report back once I receive them!

looks like you have narrow it down pretty well to begin with, yes H&Rs 1.2" kit is probably one of the best options out there (might look in to bump stops while u at it). 22" are also great, I would be still riding 22" but had to go down to 21" due to my KW setup!

Nice! Not as many 21" wheel/tire options, but I think that's the sweet spot for these cars. 22" is on the verge of being too big, but I think they will look good in person.

I have a vision for this car with some other small miscellaneous mods. Should be a nice journey between now and next summer!

Agreed, I replaced the fronts shortly after purchase. I only replaced the rears because the clip on one of them broke and the reflector fell right off the back bumper.

I just ran your VIN through the decoder (it's still listed for sale) and your X5 doesn't have the self-leveling suspension. Mostly 3rd row equipped vehicles that have it.

Yeah, I figured. Thanks for the clarification!

Enjoyed reading about this experience. Looks like a solid buy and I wish you luck. I'll actually be looking for one with similar specifications soon!

What are your plans as far as a wheel/tire setup for the WI winters?

I've done this on older BMWs by capping the vacuum line that goes to the muffler. I'm assuming it's not quite as easy on these cars? I'll have to look up a DIY.

Thanks man! I already have a set of Pirelli Scorpion snow tires in the factory sizes. Having access to a tire machine, I'll just swap them onto the style 333 wheels before the snow starts to fly. I might add some spacers at the same time. Next spring I'll be looking into a 22" summer wheel setup, that way I can keep the style 333's with snow tires as my winter wheel setup.

I believe the vacuum system is reversed on this car. Plugging the line will keep the valve shut. For his car, all you need to do is zip tie the little lever up. Takes 30 seconds to do

Good to know, I might do that tonight with some of the other small modifications that arrived already. Stay tuned!
