rear hatch control module

I have a 2011 X5 35d e70. the rear compartment filled with rain water, shortly after the rear lift gate stopped working. the control module was under a couple inches of water, and i suspect it was ruined. my question is, can i replace the control unit myself, or will it need to be registered/re-programmed by bmw?
thank you for any information

You can simply plug in a new one. It may not work right away but give car a chance to turn on/off a couple times and it will start working.

Also, drill a hole in the bottom of that compartment to let water out.

Installed new control module a few days ago. still not working! should i disconnect the battery to reset the computer? and if i do, will i have to bring back to the dealer to have the battery re-registered?

You can disconnect the battery as often as you want - you wont need to do anything

As far as the module not working, perhaps the problem with the door was never the module.

Try the battery disconnect next

i will try the disconnect. i was assuming the module, due to the fact it was under water.... tailgate lock works just fine, fuses okay, door just wont lift.

Open up the box with the old module in it.

Slice the paper label and use an old credit card to slide into the seam and pop it open.

Look at the circuit board and see if it is corroded - if it is then probably was the module.

Mine worked without needing to do anything - perhaps yours will require some sort of initialization?
