Noticeable improvement with x-pipe install

I was not happy with my present exhaust setup consisting of Megan mufflers and downpipes. I experienced a very loud raspy sound at 2kish rpm which was not linear. It would get very loud then subside, then come back. At WOT it was obnoxious and I hated it, sounded like a dozen Civics in the cargo area. Neighbors and car buddies also commented how bad it was.

I decided to install an x-pipe, all them are the same, and am quit surprised at how it completely changed the XM. Gone is the low-end nasty rasby sound, replaced with a deeper (finally) exhaust note. At WOT it is still loud with burbles, but more muted and sophisticated. Given that exhaust notes are subjective, I am very happy. But the new 392 Charger that lost from a 25mpg roll was not too happy.

Nice. I was strongly advised not to do downpipes by my exhaust guy. He just did 'the exhaust mod' for me, which was just putting bigger pipes in the stock exhaust. I liked how it turned out, but still not loud enough, and was going to try a completely new exhaust setup. you've given me ideas. Could I skip the downpipes then? What was the difference from stock?

My exhaust guy told me the x-pipe makes no difference in sound, "but go ahead and believe the internet." I have a thread on the downpipes - much louder than with cats I did not like the Megan exhaust by itself - too raspy and not deep at all. In fact folks asked if I had a V6, OUCH! Now, there is no confusion. Also, the newer gen X5Ms have an x-pipe.

Ok cool. so, don't buy the megan racing exhaust then? As, it's like about the same price as just the shop modding it himself or creating one from scratch.

I posted in my journal what a difference a crosspipe makes... definitely refined the sound and removes the raspiness. Good work!

NY state trooper pulled me over when I had this setup and asked about it said it sounded like a boat from a distance ... told him it was stock.

There are random rpm ranges that sounds like a purgatory of hondas with pepboys universal coffeecan exhausts. I hope to rid that.

So, any recommendation on exhaust? I just had the mod done to my stock exhaust, I like it, but still quiet until you really open it up with m-mode. I'm guessing I'll do the x-pipe, and whatever exhaust is best

To me fabspeed is great quality but hella expensive! As most exhausts. I'd not pay more than the Megan if I'd do it again.

What X- pipe is that? Do you have a size and model number by chance ?

Thanks in advance

Any pictures looking at the tips and from underneath?

For the X-pipe mod, is that with the stock exhaust set-up?

Yes, stock exhaust pipes. 3" pipes. Any 3" x-pipe with the same spacing between the pipes will work.

Generic, Ebay is flooded with them. If you must have a brand, go with Magnaflow, they cost more, but no different.

Fairly easy for a competent welder. OEM pipe would need to be cut. Just about any muffler person should be able to do it for under $100.
