Ahh...the good 'ol RDX.

I loved my X5M so much when I bought it a year ago, it was tough driving my wife's inferior 08 RDX.

Ended up selling her RDX and bought a '13 X3 35i MSport loaded with every option @ 106k miles for only $4k more.

The X3 is the perfect compliment to my X5M.

Unless your engine is built with loose tolerances, as in a built racing engine, I would not go 50 weight at all for OEM tolerances. 5W-40 yes, 5W-50 no.

A couple more questions for everyone:

1) Ghassan has my engine and is working on the rebuild. He's offering forged rods and says it's highly recommend. I don't plan on pushing the HP more than 650ish through a tune after all is said and done, so are forged rods really going to be with the extra $2K?

2) I need to either rebuild or replace my turbos as they were damaged when the engine blew. Does anyone have any recommendations on shops that can do the rebuild? The only place I found is turbokott.com who charges $620/per turbo for a rebuild with a 1 year warranty.

Any info or experience related to either question would be greatly appreciated!

It's clear you have the itch for speed. You plan on pushing beyond 650 and you also need to rebuild your turbos. Might as well consider going bigger turbos. I say with all the costs you already sunk in rebuilding the engine, might as well go for the rods.

since rebuilding the engine was a bad surprise adding a little more and having stronger internals and having some advantage out of it can be a nice move.. i d go for it..

Good to know! They seem legit, Ghassan seems to be respected in the BMW engine rebuilding community, so I'm willing to trust him(and the 2 year warranty)

Our X5 35D has been a phenomenal vehicle. Other than routine maintenance, it's been completely problem free. It's a sport, so it drives very nicely and the diesel has plenty of power all while averaging around 25MPG. It currently has nearly 150K on it and we bought it with just over 100K miles. In all honesty, it's the reason I bought the X5M... I enjoyed the driving dynamics of the X5 so much more than the escalade I had before.

Quick update: Rebuilt turbos showed up today and engine should arrive either today or tomorrow. Next week my shop will start putting things back together and then we'll find out how everyone did on the rebuilds. It's been 4 months since the rod bearing spun, I'm definitely looking forward to getting the beast back on the road and hopefully stronger than ever!

If anyone has recommendations on things I should replace during next step, I'd appreciate it. I am replacing all vacuum hoses, coils, turbo cooling lines, and plugs.

I got mine back up and running now, but did not do any upgraded parts. Only change is I've pulled the Velos tune to the stock map and will ride it out.

I had mapped out upgraded rods and axles and pure turbos, but the cost just isn't justified for me.

With the warnings from my shop on the Velos tune coming in on power too aggressively, I really don't want to test this out again and fail.

Glad you're up and running again! I hope your warranty company was cooperative and took care of everything. I've contemplating going with a tune after I get everything back together. I'll have forged rods and all fresh internals, but nothing beyond that. That said, I really don't want to go through this again...

Another update! Engine is back from Ghassan and my shop is starting the assembly now. I opted to have just about everything plastic under the hood replaced in the process, so the cost is going up again... But in the end I think it'll be worth having a fully fresh engine compartment. One downside, we found the footwell module is damaged. I know it's under warranty, but I hate dealing with BMW... So I'm contemplating sending it for repair on one of the ebay repair services. Does anyone have any experience with such services?

Why waste money on the FRM? Just get it done from BMW once the car is back together.

Quick update:
Engine is back in the X5M and it started! We did the first start break-in and my mechanic is doing the final QC, putting all the small bits back together. Everything plastic that is under the hood the engine is new, coils, plugs and obviously all fluids have been replaced. The next thing I need to address is the footwell module. I tried shipping it to someone on ebay to get it fixed and they failed. So now I'm stuck trying to get it into a dealer for the repair. Hopefully they won't be too far out and will not give me any grief as it's clearly covered under their extended warranty on the module.

I can't wait to get past the break in period and start putting some miles on it! I'm currently thinking of doing a simple dinan S1 tune as it seems like a fairly low key, reasonable upgrade in power without risking any damage.

In unrelated news... I picked up a new BMW to use as a commuter to keep the miles off the X5M. I found a lease deal that was too good to turn down on a 2019 i3. I wanted to hate the i3... I really did. I drove one at a BMW drivers event and all be damned they are so much fun it's unbelievable. It's no X5M, but they are super peppy and quite nimble, despite the skinny tires

If the module has been removed and tinkered with by any one besides BMW, they probably would deny the coverage.

If you have time, record a video of the engine noise running at idle(hood open). We all here would like to have an idea how a “new s63” should sound like. Congrats btw.

I'll do this next week once I get the car back after the mechanic finishes the first stage of break in.
