Are 2013 50i exhaust different to other years?
My 2013 50i with M Sport and M Power Pkg does an awesome cold start growl and also the exhaust rumble could easily be heard inside the cabin.
Which is great for me since I won't even need to change it now. Couple neighbors also have 50i M Sport but either MY11 or 12. When they drive by I don't hear anything, it's completely silent. (Climbing a hill so I know their rpms are +2500) Does anyone know if MY13 exhausts changed? |

Exhaust
I think all with M Sport package has this enhance exhaust note. I had a 2013 X5 3.5 with M sport package and the exhaust sound better than my Stock 2013 X5M. I trade the X5 3.5 in for 2013 X5M because I just wanted a M car. I was fooling myself with 3.5 M Sport when deep down I knew I wanted the X5M. I'm very happy with X5M. Oh yes ...I did change out my exhaust on my X5M. I bought the Megan exhaust and I'm happy with it. Sounds better than stock and for the price you can't beat it.

I dont know as it compares to other years but I agree that the stock exhaust on the 50i is fantastic. Cold start, under load, basically at all times. Very pleasing. Have no idea if its any different than one without the M perf pkg but very happy I have it.

I bought a stock 2011 x5 5.0, no m perf package, exhaust sounds improved notably after dinan software stage2 was installed.

My 2012 X6 (should be same exhaust) has an incredible start rumble/sound. But it dies down after a minute or two. Only re-appears if you get on the car. I suspect your neighbors cars have transitioned into that "semi-silent" mode when they are driving past you and they are not getting on it. There is a post somewhere here about a guy with a 50i who upgraded to the M and thought the exhaust sounded much more tame in the M. The exhaust is the #1 reason to get the V8 on this beast.

11,12 and 13 all the same sound, although maybe the 13 with the PP sounds a little louder/deeper
not much though!

'13 50i with M perf here and the exhaust sounds fantastic! It can definitely be heard, has a very nice rumble, and it is still quiet in the cabin when cruising. Very well balanced. I don't see a need for an upgrade.

Fairly sure all the 50i models do the same. On my old 2012 X5 50i M Sport, a cold start would certainly be louder but would fall off and quiet down after 10-20 seconds. It would get loud again under full throttle as well.

Bumping an old thread I think MY13 cars with M Performance Package did receive a different muffler because it is much more audible than my neighbor's.
So I made a quick video of cold start. It is not as boomy/bass in real life. |

Sorry to revive an old thread. I have a '13 50i with M perf. The exhaust sound is intoxicating. It is my wife's car and I find myself standing by the front windows so I can listen to her drive away...

The M Performance muffler is most assuredly quite different than a non- M Performance 50i. The MPerf unit is valved and has two outlets from the suitcase to the exhaust tips - it is significantly louder than non Perf. package 50i, which has no valves and a suitcase design that is far to quiet and restrictive for the vehicle, IMO.

Hmm, I wonder how hard it would be to retrofit on a non-performance package.
ECS sells the OEM performance package muffler with flaps for a little over $1100...which isn't too crazy. http://www.ecstuning.com/ES2599027/

I never looked at the muffler to see, but on my 35i M Sport with Performance Package there is one outlet from the muffler to the tip and it definitely has a vacuum valve on the right side. When it opens it is very clear this isn't the standard X5 exhaust.
Last weekend I happened to be carrying some long pieces and left the rear hatch cracked open. WOW! I have never heard it from the "outside" before, but the exhaust is even louder than I thought it was. Now the I6 isn't going to have the same growl as the V8, but the sound is a high pitched scream and it sounds really good I think. Thought I would chime in as no one had made note of the 35i exhaust difference yet. |

I wonder what the vacuum lines are tied to...is Sport mode louder than normal, or do they just open above a certain RPM.
