First Snow Storm in Pittsburgh

Steelers play tonight and it is suppose to snow with estimated 3-6 inches of snow by tomorrow. I still have my original tires on and have done nothing in regards to snow tires. I have been wondering how this beast will react to slippery conditions using the original summer tires. I am tempted to use my other car tomorrow, but a big part of me want to test the beast to see how she does....! It's gonna happen sooner or later.

Maybe the weather people will be wrong!

Going it does just fine, stopping is where it becomes a problem. I will never drive on summer tires in the snow EVER.

A couple customers of mine have just used 20 inch Pirelli snows. Car does very well with them.

I put my winter tires on this week (18" Pirelli Scorpions) and the X6 feels waaay more 'planted' with them than the 20" summer tires, which had already started to slip on a few occasions under both acceleration and braking. If you live in the ice and snow belt, do not try and drive through the winter on the summer tires - you'll be sorry....!

Cheers, Anteater.

I'm a California kid so I had to Google snow tires to find out what they are..
Seriously those of you switching tires are your normal tires run flats ? I would be curious to get opinions on how you think the car handles going from RF to normal ( ok ST aren't normal) tires. And did you just switch the tires or are you using a second set of wheels and tires.

Anyone else done some tire switching ?

Most of the X6s that have left my dealership have just put tires on the stock 20s, and they will be back in the spring to switch them out with the summer RFTs.

Park2670, Would you mind if my dealer contact (parts manager at Bobby Rahal) calls you to discuss as he is not sure what to do on my new X6...??

dmlgc,

My Pirelli Scorpion winter tires are also Run-flats - it's difficult to really compare to the summer RFT's given the size difference. I'm using a separate set of wheels and tires as it reduces risk of rim damage during changing as well as being cheaper on tires - there is more choice for 18" rims than 20" and the narrower tire is also much better for snow driving than the 10/11" on the OEM's..

Cheers, Anteater

Follow this link. Instead of trying to find a staggered setup in snows, I have just been using 4 front tires. click here http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....1=yes&place=18

Just FYI, they are NOT runflat tires.
