I Drive Start-Up Time

The start-up time for the I Drive in my 09 X6 50i varies greatly. At times it is immediate and other times it may take 5 to 10 seconds after starting the ignition.What causes the variation?

This happens in my e92 too. Although it doesn't very as much.. it does always take a while to start up.

The iDrive starts running or boots up the second you unlock the doors on your car. When you unlock the vehicle and take a few seconds to get in, the system should immediately display the warning screen and be ready to use.

If you unlock the vehicle, and get in quickly, the system will need a few seconds to start up.

I can't remember the exact timing but iDrive takes anywhere from 20-30 seconds to fully boot up (ie: for screen to fully show and back-up camera to function). I have noticed with my X6 that if you use the remote and press the unlock button as you are walking up to car and then get in and start up it is usually booted up in time but if I keep key in my pocket and walk up and use comfort access to unlock doors and immediately get in and start up and then put into to reverse I usually have to wait 5-10 seconds to allow iDrive to fully boot up. It is a pain in the ass and I mentioned to my service advisor and it has been a known problem on all iDrive for some time. He claimed they had been working on a fix for a long time now and probably will not come up with one since the new iDrive is about to be out in all vehicles in a few months and this is no longer a problem as the new iDrive boots right up since it is hard drive based.

Geez ,
you would think the "new" version would be flash based , uses little power and is almost instant on. What I realy want to know is when BMW is going to put in (already there in X6) a USB port that would allow me to download all my settings so if they have to disconnect the battery for some reason I could put them all back.

I can get in my X6, put it in reverse, back out and pull away before the rear camera even comes on...

It is the same on the X5 as it is slow on the loaner I have as well

Same here on my X6. If I open the car with the remote as I'm walking up to it, I notice it is pretty much ready to use as I get in.

Since I use CA a lot more than the FOB, I noticed it takes a while to start up and I'm ususally reversing before the camera has even turned on. The PDC beeping on the other hand starts pretty much immediately so I guess the two aren't that linked except for displaying on the screen.
