X5M - Active M Differential - fluid change

Okay, so I have searched and looked on realoem.

I was under the car this morning.

It looks like there are three diffs??

I have 75w-85 oil. Do I also need the 75w-140?

Does anyone have a process for rear differential fluid change?

Thanks,

There are 2 diffs and a transfer case. The transfer case needs special fluid and you should only use the oem fluid on the transfer case. It’s basically a wet clutch pack.

Front diff, I haven’t looked at but is a super pain in the ass to get to the fill plug. Or it was at least on my 4.8i with adaptive drive. Bmw routed the adaptive drive hydrolic lines in front of the fill port. There is a special set of shorty Allen wrench’s you’ll need.

The rear diff is limited slip so it would need friction modifiers correct? Redline or equivalent 75w-85 is recommended for the front, no after market fluids available for the Xfer case. Rear needs friction modifiers.
https://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E70-X5.../Differential/

I’d tend to stick with oem fluid for the rear diff, as they have been known to be noisey without the oem fluid.

I should have been clear.

Here are the listed oils for my MY car on realoem:

13 BMW Synthetik OSP 1L X 07/2011 83222365987
Filling quantity, see Additional
Information

13 Final-drive unit gear oil SAF Carbon Mod 0,5L X 83120445832
Filling quantity, see Additional
Information

From what I gather, 83222365987 is an SAF-XO castrol fluid, GL5.

The 83120445832 is a 75w-85 oil. Found here and other places:

https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...waAs7jEALw_wcB

So, I wonder what changed in the differential after MY 7/2011.

I'm going to go 83222365987 because my car is build date 2010.

Any additional thoughts?

The 75w-85/90 will work as well. I looked it up and I used 75w-90 redline full synth in my diffs without issue. I corrected above. I have a bottle left from my former x5. I changed the fluids on my x5 4.8, but not on my m. M has only 48k miles and I’ll replace the diff, xfer and transmission fluid around 60k.

Where are you finding 83222365987?

It's been a while since I looked into this but this oil would go at each end of the diff, Right? While 83120445832 going in the middle?

I would measure the oil drained in each chamber and refill the same amount with fresh fluid.

Correct oil for front and rear Diffs https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...r/83222282583/

Not to be used in transfer case..... For transfer case use:

Hmm..

Finally getting around to doing this. Pulled the following document form ShopKey.Pro:

Any final thoughts on the part number difference between "SAF carbon mod" and "SAF XO Burmah Castrol"??

I'm busy fixing the track car so I haven't gotten to doing this fluid swap yet. Here's the info I've gathered on the fluid.

I tried contacting ZF for information on differential but they denied it was their product.

The procedure:
https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...-drive/Pk9i8JT

In searching 83 22 2 365 987 it appears to be a 75W-90 oil

Use the one with the FM booster for front and rear differentials. it actually seems to me that you have to mix the oils. Maybe mix the carbon mod with the fm booster oil?

It seems that the its all mixed together in one bottle. This might be the reason why the original part was superseded.
Though every time I look into the fluids for the diff it confuses me. hopefully together we can clear the confusion.

Yes possibly. But from what I've read the new clear bottle is the new version. All very confusing.

This is what I gather from all of this:

For the front differential, I will use: 33117695240 which was superseded by
83222365987 (75w-90). This is for cars built up to 7/2011. After 7/2011, BMW went to Hypoid Gear Oil - 83222295532 (75w85).

Near as I can tell, these are also the oils called "SAF XO Burmah Castrol” in the listed documents (TIS / Shopkey in above posts) and good for the rear differential, too.

For the other oil called "SAF carbon mod," I will use 83 12 0 445 832 (75w85). Also, for the rear differential.

Thoughts?

I can't imagine a more convoluted picture of differential oils than BMW has "designed" here.

I'm going to have to speak to my tech who is a M master tech. I'll post here tomorrow once I've spoken to him. Thank you.

Edit: from my understanding both 83120445832 or 83222282583 would be fine for the rear differential.

As far as the front differential is concerned its 83120445832 or this plus some other type? Once i confirm with my tech i'll update you all.

Front is standard diff fluid swap with hypoid g2 used 75w85.

Rear is where the fun happens, there are 3 different chambers for the two types of differential fluids. Outside 2 use saf carbon mod and a total of about 1.12L, middle chamber used saf xo but think it was replaced by hypoid g1 and that is about 1L

You have an M car, which means More Money!

Did you really think you could just go to autozone and pick up the on sale penzoil with coupon?

Perhaps there are approved 3rd party oils, but if you have to buy BMW branded oil, we'll always pay a premium.

I get the ///M tax and "if you wanna play..." stuff, just sincerely shocked at how much it costs to fill a single differential.

I've run royal purple or redline in my other BMWs without issue, though they were always manual and only one other was an ///M. Since the X5M has the automatic I used OE fluid in the tranny. This torque vectoring monstrosity uses more fluid than other diffs and the oil is super expensive also. I was thinking $150 max to swap fluid...didn't expect the diff fluid to cost more than the tranny fluid.

I wound up using Royal Purple with the same weight and added the BMW to the middle. It runs fine.

I contacted redline to see what they say. Here was their response:

I show in the X5 dynamic axle both right and left call for the SAF Carbon
In the center SAF-XO

The SAF Carbon Mod was previously a 75W90 viscosity now a 75W85 GL-5.
The SAF-XO is a 75W90 GL-5

The outer sections don’t require a GL-5, the center doesn’t use a high offset so technically doesn’t require a GL-5 either.

A GL-5 could be used in all three locations, the 75W85 or 75W90 in the outer and 75W90 in the center.

Which route are you looking to do? I may go with the Liquimoly 75W90 GL-5 for all 3. The weight difference going from W90 to W85 is so small.
