BMW says X6 demand high

Statement by Dr. Norbert Reithofer
Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG
Conference Call Interim Report to September, 30th 2008
4 November 2008

...The BMW X6 has been available for half a year now. This car is exceeding all expectations. Demand is high, particularly in the US, in Italy, Germany and the Middle East. It underlines BMW’s ability to create a new segment successfully.
The new BMW 7 Series is due out in Europe this month. Initial feedback at the international media presentation in Dresden was more than positive - outstanding.
  • And let me add a third point: We are offering new technologies and drive concepts:
In 2009, two BMW hybrid models will reach series maturity - the BMW 7 Series and the X6.

My dealer in TX said that demand is overwhelming for the X6 here and every one that comes in is already pre-sold and they could sell a lot more if they had more allocations.

I don't buy the demand is high propaganda.
At least not in the US.
If demand is so high, we should be expecting the X6 to sell maybe 10,000 units in the US for this year. YTD sales should be about 8000 units, but they have been able to sell just 3712 units since April. Worldwide sales YTD is at 15,444 units, let us see if they will make 25,000 units by year end.
Let the CEO keep saying whatever he wants to say.

Eurocar Sept 2008:

"2008 sales figures leave no room for speculation: BMW has experienced a decrease of ten percent compared to the 2007 sales of 336,265 units, while the Mini brand has had increase of 12 percent, from 42,000 to 50,000.

New BMW North America manager Jim O’Donnell in January will present a new industrial plan to managers that should present a re-organisation of US operations to cut costs. It will likely be the X5 and X6 range where most savings will be made, possibly to the detriment of workers on these production lines."

Well don't know about reorga or numbers but I know folks here in the forum are still waiting for delivery of their 08 models which are getting roled over to 09 models and at this rate may end up being 10 models. I waited 5 months for my 50i and I am glad I have it.
I know my dealer is all out and from messages here seems like a lot are.

Most BMW dealerships in US are selling every X6 they get. The problem is that they are not producing nearly as many X6s as they are other models because BMW made decision to export more X6 model to European countries because they can sell them for a lot more and makes BMW more profitable. Classic BMW and BMW of Dallas have sold every X6 they have received and Classic has 7 people on waiting list for X6 50i and I think BMW of Dallas has more people on waiting list for X6

X6 Sales

Here are a couple of post from GermanCarZone regarding X6 sales. My info is off the BMW Manufacturing website. There seems to be a disconnect between what is listed on the BMW Website and the Monthly Sales numbers that BMW releases every month.I think the difference has to do w/ the different launch dates for the 35i and 50i and the phased release of the X6 to all the Worldwide markets.I guess the only way to get an accurate sales picture will be to wait until full year sales are reported for 2009.The post by Eni is accurate on X6 sales...he works for BMW Marketing in Munich. Thanks! PalBay
The Week of 10/20/2008
Total X5 Units: 1,882
Total X6 Units: 851

Total Units: 2,733

The Month of September
Total X5 Units: 11,653
Total X6 Units: 4,600
Total Z4 Units: 17
Total Coupe Units: 0
Total Units: 16,270

2008 YTD
Total X5 Units: 105,807
Total X6 Units: 29,120
Total Z4 Units: 8,201
Total Coupe Units: 1,474

Total Units: 144,602

2007 Totals
Total X6 Units: 261
Total X5 Units: 131,528
Total Z4 Units: 19,846
Total Coupe Units: 5,895

Total Units: 157,530

These numbers are right off BMW Manufacturing's Web Site....the place the X6 is built. The North American sales appear low...the problem w/ that assumption....I don't know what BMW originally projected for North American sales. The YTD X6 Sales Worldwide through Oct (29,120) are close to being right about where BMW projected 1st full year sales for the X6....between 30,000 to 40,000 units. The wait in North America is about 8-12 months for an X6 when ordered and about the same for international customers. There are virtually no X6's in stock at dealerships anywhere in the US.It would appear that the bulk of X6 sales are international (not North American).Somebody, somewhere is buying the X6.Thanks! PalBay

"The new BMW X6 was introduced in April. In total, 15,444 units had been sold up to the end of September 2008." Quote from Eni at GermanCarZone

Palbay you wrote this: "The wait in North America is about 8-12 months for an X6 when ordered and about the same for international customers" Of course, it's not your statement, but a quote. I ordered my X6 35 D one month ago, and it's going off the prod. line in about a week or so. People interested in having an X6 quicker should stay closer to the local BMW dealer. .you never know who drops off the waiting list, and prefer to buy an X5 instead, for faster delivery.

Good news....I'm glad your wait was short. You would think with the tough economy some production slots would open up due to drop outs.I'm not sure if that is happening though.I guess time will tell. Thanks! PalBay
