Did I get hosed (BMW dealer)

3 months ago, had a misfire, took it to the dealer and they diagnosed as cyl 1&2. Also told them I have a tickling sound that I didn't hear until this misfire > told normal sound . Brought the car back > changed all plugs (Bosch... same numbers but without BMW logo) > misfires persisted but now Cyl 1&3 > changed coils > fixed 3 but cyl 1 misfired again > swapped the coils > nothing

The tickling sound kept bothering me so brought it back this morning and requested technician specifically look at it. SA had me change all plugs to BMW OEM before going any further. We argued a little bit but she won't budge so i said OK. I did tell her it better be the plugs and not the Injectors (known issue in this model and warrantied for 10/120,000 miles).

2 hours later, I was told it was injectors 1 & 2 that they went ahead and replaced but what about the plugs?

So I was charged $700 for the plugs which I didn't need to begin with. SM wasn't there so I couldn't take it up with him until Mon.

Don't they have the ability to check the injectors without having the customer switch the plugs to OEM?

Is this the right approach?

Any recourse/refund?

$700 for plugs ... that’s about what they charge ... it’s about 100 or so for plugs themselves

They literally used a fire hose on you this is what dealers do .... non OEM plugs is nonsense a dealer will bend u over again and again why I don’t go and happens anytime I do

Good luck

Plugs are 100-150 and it takes about 30 mins or so to do them. Not sure why they charge 700!

Speaking from an e70 x5m cost.

They can diagnose bad injectors without replacing the plugs. But generally the techs diagnose bad injectors by removing the plugs and looking if they are wet especially on the threads.

So if you’ve already removed them, why not replace....

But I’ve gone done this road and didn’t have the plugs replaced. Diy then myself on both the n63tu and s63 I own. Plugs are a diy. But the price seems in ball park for a v8 at the dealer, I think I was quoted 700 or so. The parts department prices on plugs are damn high, on the v8. It should be 1-2 hrs labor.

I had a check engine with loss of power come on one time and had to go back to the dealer after just picking up the X5. Turns out it was a bad coil and they wanted 450 for the fix. I asked for a quote to replace all 8 since I would have all new coils and plugs at the same time. The quote jumped to 2200. I told them to do that one coil and plug since I needed to get the truck back. The following week I ordered 7 coils and plugs and did it myself. It took me 3 hours and with basic tools and a special 14mm socket ($12) and I learned a few things on the way. In summary, these vehicles are absurd when it comes to cost of repair and maintenance. Either get used to it or get rid of it when they reach 100k miles. No wonder they cut back on CPO.

The dealer will always hose you. Find a good independent mechanic in your area and the costs will be much lower.

I am not referring to the cost of the spark plugs. I am referring to bypassing the Injector diagnosis and making me swap out the plugs first?
