Oh NO! '11 X6 Engine malfunction/power loss

I have only had the X6 35i for four weeks. Love the ride and look, but had trouble starting a couple of times. Now the "engine malfunction" "reduced power" indicator is on. I've seen old threads on this issue. Very discouraging. Is this still a chronic problem?

I remember reading something similar on the 3 series forum about the same HPFP problem in the N54 carrying over to the N55 engines cuz BMW uses the same HPFP in both of them.

Yes that is correct. I am a 335i owner. If your x6 is turbo then it is most likely the HPFP. I have had mine changed out twice and my car only has 35000 miles. That is with the N54 engine.

I cannot figure out how BMW can afford all the warranty work compared to just fixing the issue. The issue has been out there for three years (I think) and still not fixed.

You would think that on reputation alone, they would fix it. Very unfortunate situation, you don't deserve the trouble you are having. I hope they fix it once and for all.......good luck......Steve

I'm having the exact same symptoms as yours! My 2009 X6 35i now has 10,300 miles was found to have problem and need to replace:

- High Pressure Pump
- Activate Charcoal Filter
- Dust Filter
- Leak Diagnosis Pump

So, I guess it's not just mine or yours it's all the N54 engines!

Is it just the light or did you actually have a reduction in power?
That light goes on for other reasons as well.

If N54 is having such problem then why it is being used in the new 1M series. Or they have found the solution to the N54 engine.

Fuel additives used in the us produce octane but use alcohol. This is hard on the seals on the pump. I have almost 70k on my 07 335 and I upgraded the fuel pump after using alcohol based fuel enhancers to boost octane. I believe that the ethanol found in @ 50 % of all fuel types may be facilitating these failures. Try High grade premium. Shell, Hess, 76. BP uses ethanol and our dealership has an account with them to keep the bimmers topped off so that can't help keeping a full tank of e10 sitting until they are sold. There are products now designed to keep the car protected from the ethanol so I use a little of that every month and no convenient store gas.... no matter how good the price. stick with shell. It can't hurt.

I am getting this message. I have been since I bought the vehicle 5 years ago. The vehicle never is at a real loss of power. I do purchase fuel at convenience stores often. I do buy 93 octane all the time. It is the twin turbo model. I was told by the mechanic that he would not be able to tell me more until he was able to take the turbos apart. I told him no.

Should I allow him to crack open the turbos to see what is going on inside or is there something else I can do?

If you have the 50i, then you have the n63 engine and best place to start is with the ignition coils and spark plugs. You should also pickup a foxwell nt510 or better scanner with the BMW software loaded on it so you can see exactly what is going on with your engine and not be at the mercy of mechanics who could easily take advantage of you.

Go to FCPeuro or autohauzaz for parts. Recommend you get the Eldor brand coils. They are superior to all other brands, especially Bosch.
