E70 N62 Rocker Arm Fallen
Been chasing a hesitation problem for the past 6 months. Multiple CAN faults and cel are present. Stealership replaced negative battery cable and ibs but no difference. Searched all over for a short but couldn't find any. Replaced alternator, pointless. Checked Vanos, all working. Replaced driver side Valvetronic actuator due to fluctuating ohms value on multimeter, wasn't the problem. Finally, what I hoped not to perform, replace eccentric shaft sensors. So today I removed the driver side valve cover and removed eccentric sensor. Nothing unusual, connector and beneath the square metal plate was free of oil. However, I discovered a fallen rocker arm. Now I'm quite confident that all along, this was the culprit! Now, how bad of a job would it be to reinstall the rocker piece?

You can put them back in you just need to turn the motor over to a point where the cam puts as little tension as you can on that rocker and use a pick. It's a pain in the ass and you need to be careful but it can be done. Interesting that it tossed one out on its own though-I've only seen that happen during reassembly for repairs that they come out...

Doubtful that the oil caused it, how much difference can there be between those two similar spec oils?

I apparently have the same issue with my E70 N62 X5. I am getting a constant misfire on cylinder 8. My valvetronic's motor spring snapped prior to the constant misfire and I had to replace. Aligned with ISTA and thought everything was fine. Still misfire on cylinder 8. Took off valve cover and found these parts bouncing around in the top of the engine near cylinder 8. Changed the oil and found a couple of the smaller parts in the old oil. Guessing they fell down the oil drain ports. Still haven't attempted to fix this yet debating what to do. Was thinking to replace the broken rocker arm tow lever and then drop the oil pan to make sure there is no leftover metal pieces. Hopefully that will solve. Please help.
You can see in the photo once of the ears broke off the rocker arm tow lever. |
