Bump - post updated.

Drove 25 hours round trip to New York for a 2013 X5 that didn't work out. Was noticeably wrecked in a very bad accident. Back to the drawing board...

I just helped another forum member locate a specific 2012/2013 xDrive35i - he ended up finding the one he bought but we searched for awhile.

With a $25K budget you should be able to find a nice one...with patience. I have typically only shopped/searched for 50i's (still search for fun ) and finding well optioned 35i's is not easy. The majority of them are the 'Premium' trim - finding a Sport or M Sport, they're just isn't a big selection. And when you do find them, not a lot of optional equipment (though Convenience is found on pretty much all of them).

Some additional thoughts you may or may not be aware of...?

- M Sport was not available with Bronze exterior, so no worries there.
- The 'really want...' list, some of those will be near impossible to find, even on a 50i. Active Steering, Active Cruise Control, and Lane Departure are 3 of the rarest E70 options. But you never know, just keeping running VINs through the decoder!
- Shift paddles and Lane Departure Warning are mutually exclusive - if optioned with Lane Departure Warning, paddles are eliminated.
- Paddles available only on later 2012 models (October 2011+ build dates), not the earlier ones - and of course all 2013 M Sports.
- Heated steering wheel only available on 2013 M Sports, 2012's even with CWP did not get the heated wheel
- Adaptive Suspension ('Adaptive Drive') was included on 2011 M Sports, but not on 2012/2013. Hard to find on 2012/2013's, really hard. It was a standalone option these 2 years, and quite expensive.

And no multi-contour seats. For many of us here, those are a must-have option.

Any restrictions on location - would you ship?

Nice to have another nit-picker looking with me!

Good to know on the paddles/lane warning options. I wonder why those two aren't compatible together. I think I'd rather have the paddles, but could go with either.

The one I found in NY had active steering and I really liked it compared to standard steering. That was one of three I found with the option. I've only found active cruise once, and it was on a 50i. Adaptive drive is about as common as the active steering. Found a 2012 with both, but it was an ugly color combo.

I found another potential candidate today that I'm going to call on, but it looks like it might be pending sale already.

No location restrictions! I will purchase a private party inspection and get it shipped home, that's not an issue for me.

Yes, there was some shortage on the steering wheels, so it's that much more difficult to fine one with the heated steering wheel.

And I think that some of the safety items would be mutually exclusive (ie, they use the same buttons or were not available in combination).

I gave up searching and 'settled' for an M instead

What do you mean by ugly color combo? What exteriors do you prefer? We're you referring to that 2013 in Concord CA...Alpine over Oyster with Active Steering and Adaptive Drive, along with a ton of other options.

Different one here, Alpine over Cinnamon -

M Sport
Convenience
Cold Weather
Technology
Comfort/Multi-Contour Seats
Active Steering
Soft Close Doors
Rear Seat Entertainment
Space Saver Tire

Here's a build you don't see often, most options/packages, but Premium trim, no Sport or M Sport. Ad says M Sport but decoder says otherwise.

Convenience
Cold Weather
Technology
Active Ventilated Seats
Active Steering
Adaptive Drive
Soft Close Doors
Leather Dashboard
3rd Row Seats
Active Cruise Control
Premium Sound
Rear Seat Entertainment

Seems odd though. BMW offered a heated steering wheel on every other trim (Base, Sport, X5M) several years prior to 2012. All E70 X5M's (2010-2013) got a heated steering wheel when optioned with CWP, and the X5M and M Sport steering wheels are nearly identical. Only different stitching color, paddle style, and button configuration (no ///M button on M Sport).

I'm not a fan of the oyster or tan interiors. Cinnamon is nice though.

Believe it or not, my second post in this thread is about that alpine white 2013 you linked to. I drove to NY with a check in hand, ready to buy the car. After taking it for a road test, it had a very annoying noise at 65-70mph. Being mechanically inclined, I knew it wasn't tires, wheels or alignment. It was something driveline related. Further digging and I noticed the whole front end and passenger side were replaced. Front bumper, headlights, core support, both doors, fenders, even the metal part of the chassis was rewelded together. It was in a really bad wreck.

That, along with the weird noise, was enough for me to pass. I worked him down to $20k, but I still wasn't comfortable with it. Ended up walking away and lost ~$1,000 on the trip. They wouldn't even give me my $250 deposit back. I'd recommend any of you interested in that car to stay away, very shady.

Your second link sounds nice, but I'm set on getting an M-Sport. The rest of the options sound nice though!

I just found this one: https://www.goodwheelsonline.com/veh...5ff7c80cb69bc2

I think that's about as good as it gets, but it's sold was listed for only $19,995 too!

Has everything I want and more... someone got a deal.

For having 108k on the odo, that driver seat looked in great condition, unless it was replaced or reupholstered. Nevertheless, a great price.

Here's a few I saw on cars.com. There's probably 3-4 pages of 35i's that don't include any pictures or have a stock/wallpaper photo - could be some nice ones in there but you'd have to decode every one of them (I decoded a few but they were all Premium trims).

None of these below are loaded but pretty well optioned. I also just re-read your original post and saw heated steering wheel is a must, so that would limit you to 2013's only since M Sport is also a must have. Anyhow, some of these below are 2012's.

Deep sea blue on the 2nd one is 😍

Engine bay on the last one is 🤢🤮

If you're focused on options, don't wait for pictures, just run the vin and then check on it

Ad says Deep Sea Blue but decoder says Carbon Black.

They've got it under some pretty intense lights where it looks like it might be Deep Sea Blue, but Carbon Black can look nearly that blue under the right lighting.

Only seen the decoder wrong once or twice and I've run 100's, maybe 1000's of VINs over the years. Deep Sea Blue over Cinnamon though

Dont trust the ad automatically. lots of dealers make mistakes when listing out the options. i could tell you how many i saw listed as "m-sport" when they clearly werent. vin decoder is the way to go

good luck on the search!

Thanks for this list! I found the first three already on CarGurus, but there was something I didn't like about each.

The first one has a really wavy rear bumper where it meets the hatch, which makes me wonder if it's been in an accident before. If I am going to spend top dollar (~$25k), I want it to be accident-free.

The second one is nice, but at that price I'd like technology package. Still a solid candidate though!

The third one is also nice, but no technology package for $25k. However, it has low mileage.

The last one I haven't seen before. For the price, I think it's a top candidate. Has everything I need, plus technology package and premium sound... all for $20k. Looks like it could use a good cleaning, but the spec is good. It's also the closest to me, 10 hours away. I'm going to inquire about it.

I think I was spoiled after seeing the fully loaded '13 in Jersey go for $20k with cooled/massage seats, technology package, tow hitch, etc.

I may be able to swing by and check out the 1st one for you if you want. My bumper had the same problem when I bought it, exact same spot too. The previous owner told me someone nudged into it the bumper when parking. Ive seen other posts around here with the same problem. Basically, the clips popped out of the slot on the frame. It was a real easy fix- just pulled the bumper out and realigned it and its good as new.

Now it is possible that the clip broke, at which point you would need a new bumper, but judging on how its sitting, Im guessing it just needs an alignment.

Interesting, the only other thing I noticed was that it's missing the whole wiper arm too. I'm going to inquire about the 4th one on that list, but if I circle back to the first one, I'll let you know. I don't want to waste your time going to check it out if I'm not going to pursue it. However, it's so nice of someone on an enthusiast forum to offer a service like that!

Np man. Let me know! Lodi is only 25 min from me so its not far

I just put a deposit on this car last night! I know you shared it as a 2012, but it's a 2013. Called the dealership and talked details with them for a while. Turns out it's the owner of the dealership's best friend's wife's car... if you can wrap your head around that. The owner put the car on his lot to help his friend sell it. He's a rich farmer who had it serviced at BMW for everything. Single owner, no accidents, maintenance records, both key fobs, etc.

Got them down on the price a little because the rear bumper had the same wavy problem that I was talking about above. Hopefully I can fix that. It also has pretty bad pitting on the rear fender flares, I think the farmer lives on a dirt road (hence engine bay dirt).

I'm trying something new and purchased an inspection service from LemonSquad so I don't waste time/money like I did when trying to buy the white one in New York. If it checks out, I'll probably have my friend transport it home for $900 in an enclosed trailer.

I'm excited! After running the VIN, I see it has soft-close doors as well. It also has my favorite interior color combo (black w/ aluminum). I was really hoping I'd find an alpine white X5, but I think this carbon black will grow on me.

Anything else I should know or check for? Thanks jiggz!

Congratulations! I’d check if the water pump (common failure in the 35i) & front drive shaft (mfg recall) have been replaced. Also, check for shudder during low speed turns, which indicates transfer case failure (another common failure point)

Just checked the service history. Water pump hasn't been replaced. Front drive shaft has warrantied already. Transfer case is original.

I've done the water pump on my 135i a few times now, so I'm not too worried about that. Hopefully the LemonSquad inspector will report on any low speed shuttering if it's present.
