I'm somewhat confused as to which E70 models(3.0,4.8,35d,35i,50i,M) this pertains to? I had my 2011 50i front drive shaft replaced for excessive rust on the u- joint for free during the N63 campaign... build date is 6/10.

Does this mean i need to crawl under the M and check for that part number(7597649) as well?

I guess you have to do it to make sure. I also have 11 50i and I don't have the sticker with the p/n.

It depends on which drive shaft they pulled out of inventory and what p/n it has on it. Only one way to tell ...

It appears that BMWNA knew about this issue from 8/2014 service bulletin, which replaced an earlier SIB.

[QUOTE=yoandry;18576738]Wow, that's terrible. I'm not quite sure but people on other posts are receiving a letter for extending the warranty to 10/120k on this drive-shaft failure. I thought this was failing on the front side not on the back. Call your SA and tell them, as you said, they change the part for an updated one so something is wrong and they need to cover it. Here is the letter that other people have been receiving. I haven't get mine either so.[/QUOT

Anyone aware of BMW in Europe extend warranty as well? Would assume problem is global

Decided to check mine out since I got the letter the other day. I have the old part number and grease is flinging out all over the side of the transmission case. Gonna have them change it out soon.

No nothing.. Driveshaft of the 50i and M have different numbers in the ETK.. If they are better? Don't know. But they are not the same parts..

I also had mine "inspected" and found to be okay. A month later it snapped and stranded my wife who is still hacked off at it.

My 2012 X5 has the vibration/shake issue when turning at low speeds. The dealership replaced the drive shaft as part of a warranty. However, they say that did not fix the problem and now the vehicle needs a new transfer case. Has anyone else had this problem with the need for a new transfer case after a drive shaft replacement? The dealership said BMW has offered to pay 75% of the cost but it's still over $1300 for my cost.

I don't think the driveshaft replacement resulted in TC failure; likely that your TC was already failing. Seems like a not-so-uncommon issue: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...ight=vibration

Can you describe in detail what you mean by "vibration/shake" at low speed turns? I have a 2012 X5 and would be curious to know.. I don't have any vibration, but when i make turns sometimes feels like i'm going over a couple of small bumps. Wondering if its the same!

My vibration issue sounds like the same as your small bumps issue. It feels like driving over a rumble strip when turning the corner at low speeds. You might want to have it checked. It is definitely expensive to fix.

Just got my X5 back from the dealer. They replaced my front drive shaft. I showed him the pic I took and handed him a print out of the SIB.

Didn't clean up the grease spatter on the oil pan, guess I'll clean it up when I change the fuel filter soon.

Nice job!

That's the way to do it. You just save yourself from a potential catastrophic failure ...

Has anyone with a 2013 bmw x5m had there front driveshaft replaced? I feel like mine may need to be replaced… I have a vibration/pulsation around 60mph...I thought it was my winter tires as they were getting low at 5/32 but I just replaced my tires with brand new Toyo observe gsi-5… I asked my local dealer about this and they said it does not apply to my year but to bring the vehicle in this week for a inspection.

Dropped my mid-2012 X5M in to the dealer yesterday - knocking sound from front left on tight turns .... like the CV joint on my first car 100 years ago ...

Yep need new front drive shaft, courtesy of BMW fortunately - which being in NZ has to come from Germany. Hope it lasts until then ... 50k miles.

Service guy wasn't familiar but his tech guy said they replaced a handful.

So maybe 2012 onwards are afflicted afterall, M's as well as other models.

Worth checking i reckon.

Just found this thread. So at the end of 2014 after the BMW dealer ensured me I had an ok drive shaft I was driving on the freeway and heard a loud thud along with a lot of noise. Drive shaft had blown apart. 6 weeks later BMW replace the engine, transmission, and drive shaft along with some other pieces under the car that had been a bit damaged. So that happened at 70,000 miles and now my 2011 has 97,000 but only have 27,000 mile old tranny and engine.

same happened to mine previously owned 2011 X5 35i at about 63000, draft shaft (drivers side) disconnected on highway back in October (the car was in the shop 2 weeks before this happened and everything checked out ok), since there was active recall they replaced draft shafts, put new transmission (damaged) and all under covers, the car was in the shop for about 4-5 days and I didn't have to pay a dime but that feeling when you see sparks coming out behind u car is priceless (scary). Since then I moved on to 13 x5m and thinking if I need to check draft shafts again. I also had a water pump and turbo vacuum failed in the same month and my AC was acting up, that made me make a jump to another car.

Can't wait to trade this thing
