I would also like to know the answer to that... I am having a shuddering sound when I turn right sometimes and it's not all the time either but always on some of the same right hand turns I take on a daily basis and only when turning right? Anyone else have that?

Here is a picture of the broken front drive shaft. Picked up the vehicle and all is good now. I asked the SA if both front drive shafts were replaced and he said that there is just one that drives the front wheels. Vanos bolts where replaced also.

Same story for me. I had my 2011 50i inspected in July and they said everything was fine. The whole thing shredded yesterday on the highway and I'm still waiting to hear from the dealership it was towed to, just what the extent of the damage is. These recall inspections are a joke!

I read your other post and i was lucky that i did not have the damage that you listed. Took my dealership 1 day to fix and was given a loaner. Of course yours will take more time considering the damage. My SA said that anything due to the drive shaft breaking is covered. I also had a towing bill which they took care of. Let us know how it goes.

Took my 08 w/64K miles in for oil change today and was told my front U Joint was going bad...I obviously declined so I can do more research.

They quoted me $1,224.21 just for the part + 2hrs labor. GetBMWParts has it for $890...so guess I'm going to be buying this real soon and probably replacing it myself. Hope my shit don't break while I'm driving...esp w/my kids!

You can check for recalls here: http://www.bmwusa.com/standard/conte...eoverride=true

noted a shuddering vibration at slow speed especially with the wheels turned and took truck to dealership. First assessment tech said it was a sticker causing the symptom. A sticker. Of course I was back at the same dealership a week or two later and after a few days of diagnostics they discovered the problem. They had to replace the xdrive transfer case. Under warranty. Total cost approx 4k. Moral of the story. Don't ignore the symptoms and be persistent with the dealership especially if vehicle is still in warranty.

Mine was a July 2010 build and the front shaft went last Monday on my 40D with 44,000 miles on the clock. Fortunately I was just pulling away when it broke and then stopped very quickly so minimised the collateral damage to the transmission sump. Out of warranty but BMW covered all the costs as its clearly a defective issue. What is concerning is that they had already checked my front shaft back in March and gave it an all clear!!

Just an update: I was told by the dealer that they "could not duplicate" the issue and after arguing with them for now over a month and half (has been in shop for that long waiting on back-order rear cam components) took the shop foreman out for a test drive and finally got him to acknowledge there was actually a concern and they are replacing the axle!

Has anyone seen this occur on a 2012 or 2013?
Or had they changed the driveshaft design by then?

My 2011 is being towed to BMW as we speak. Service manager said he will take a look and see what BMW says because mine is out of warranty.

Are you preparing documents to prove this is a recall item?
You know well they will try to have you pay for this.

Ugh. I have not had mine replaced yet but will add this to the list.

I get some weird vibrations on the freeway sometimes, I wonder if this could be the cause. Although the part, you'd think, would just fail if it was sending any feedback through the chassis.

They said my drive shaft was fine and did not replace when taking it in for the N63 recall and drive shaft inspection. I asked him point blank what happens if it fails and causes major damange after you decide it doesn't need to replace? He didn't have a good answer for that.

When my parts get here, I am going to press to have them replace this. We'll see how it goes.

Are you going to Bellevue BMW or Seattle? I'm in the same boat. They've never mentioned this to me but I feel like they are ducking it. Please let me know how this goes for you, I'd really appreciate it.

Careful with Bellevue. They tried to get out of taking care of check engine light that happened at 49,950 miles, but my car was brought in at 50,100 miles. Then I had to force them to take care of it either way via Emissions warranty. Bastards hoped I did not know about it. In the end, was done, including free loaner.

Going to Bellevue. My 4th BMW there, so I know a bit how they work. Rennis, I will let you know what I find out when I go back. I am going to push hard for the replacement. I think about it every time I get on it...which is a lot these days.

I guess if they hold out, I can try Seattle. I wonder what the policy is here? If we demand replacement, can they still say no? They sure as heck aren't going to go out of their way when if fails in a bad way.

Sounds like a lazy SA.

The dealer gets paid for doing the work either way, but there's extra legwork to get something covered when you're technically out of warranty.

I actually really like my SA at Bellevue, but the dealership overall does not have the best reputation when it comes to service.
