Definitely do it all at once if you can. If that's not possible just split it up so the caliper, brake lines, and fluid get done first. You can always change out the pads and rotors later when they come in since those don't require messing with the fluid at all.

Giving you two weeks to see some installed pics.

Just spoke to Adam himself!

4 weeks turn around on the rotors

Will have to do this in stages.

Oh well. Good idea to do the brake lines and fluid now while the calipers are off.

Photos will certainly be posted. All the wheels are greased and appointments made, so the calipers will be back on by the end of next week. Painter will have them painted, stickered, clear coated and back to the mechanic in 48 hours.

Sounds good to me. If everything works out and you are pleased with the results I'm going to have to follow suit.

Unfortunately the prices on the website aren't accurate for the X5M. It will be a bit more than the number I mentioned above, but still pretty reasonable compared to OEM parts. I will definitely report on how things go.

Why are they not accurate? That's kinda crappy I was heavily considering Adams rotors for my X5M. What's the difference in price and the explanation you were given.

I didn't really ask for or get an explanation. I assumed the website wasn't differentiating between regular X5 brakes and the monstrous rotors on the M. Frankly, $1500.00 seemed to good to be true. It would be so much cheaper than stock components, which are pretty damn good to begin with. With the custom machining he does, he would have to be using inferior blanks to bring in an M brake systems for $1500. He quoted me $2300 for all 4 rotors, new pads and stainless steel brake lines - this includes the machining of the rotors in whatever pattern I choose and my choice of color for the hubs and zinc treatment.

Compare this price to OEM components - even ordering them from getBMWparts. This is a no brainer upgrade, especially since I am due for new rear brakes very soon anyway!

I wanted to put in the thread that I ordered my caliper stickers from an outfit in Connecticut called grafixpressions. For info on the availability of the stickers, and to order, send an email inquiry to sales@grafixpressions.com. For obvious reasons, they aren't listed on the website. The stickers cost more than those available on ebay, but all the ebay sellers are from outside the country, and who knows what you are getting if you actually get them. The ones from grafixpressions are made in the USA, are specifically designed for use on calipers, so they can handle the heat and won't peel off. They can also be customized however you want, including size and color. I ordered them yesterday, and they made them and shipped them out the same day!

As I was doing some reading, I became a bit concerned about the potential for noise from dimpled rotors. It seems pockets of air get trapped in the dimples during a braking event as the pads slide over them. Has anyone installed dimpled rotors on their X5M? Any concerns about noise from them?

The AR website indicates that the cracking concern with drilled rotors is a myth if it is done right - A quality rotor, chamfered holes and careful measuring to make sure drill holes don't hit the veins eliminates the concern. And with drilled holes the issue with noise is either significantly reduced or eliminated, as the air can escape.

Neither drilled nor dimpled rotors provide any performance benefit - they are simply cosmetic. Slotted rotors do provide better cooling, without the risk of noise. Now I am think maybe a slot/slot/drill pattern. It provides the benefit of the slots, with the looks of the drilled/dimpled, but minimizes the concern with noise/potential cracking of the rotors

Thoughts on this?

Final decision made. The venting inside the M rotors is too complex to drill, so dimpling is the only option if you want that look. So I have elected to go with the AR Track - with a slot/slot/dimple pattern.

Wow I hadn't heard that before, kind of a bummer. Did AR specifically mention drilled rotors for the X5M are unavailable?

Yes - he said the venting is too complex on an M rotor to drill. He won't drill unles he can do it with out hitting the support structure between the surfaces. If you hit them, you compromise the stability of the rotor, and that's what leads to cracking.

I'm sure he could get the drill through in some spots, but not anything that would be aesthetically pleasing.

What's everyone getting quoted to professionally paint their calipers? My shop that did an amazing job on some other stuff quoted around $1000 to remove all 4, prep, paint, apply stickers, and a ton of clear coat, then of course reinstall. They showed me examples and it looked incredible, no "orange peel" effect.

I've got a mechanic taking the calipers off and a paint shop painting them. The paint shop said about 350 to paint apply stickers and clear coat. I didn't ask for a quote from my mechanic, but I figure 2 hours on and 2 hours off. Powdercoating would have been cheaper to do, but it would have been a lot more man hours to tear the calipers down and put them back together.
