I know 0, nada, absolutely nothing about lowering cars. I want to decrease the space between the wheel are and the rims, would increase rim size (from 20s to 22) accomplish that? common sense would say no because it would simply raise the car in its entirety. 2011 x5m

Very slightly, but not really. You'll need to lower the vehicle.

+1 very slightly. but depending on the wheel and tire sizes you would roughly be keeping about the same overall diameter.

Has anyone experienced rubbing or bottoming out with the lowering springs installed? Im thinking of getting the 1.2"/1" drop with a set of 22" wheels but im double minded. Im hoping since its a "sav" theres enough suspension travel for it to not bottom out or have anything rub......

Anybody have any issues like that?

(wrong forum though, this is for my X6)

It won't bottom out. You'll be fine.

Definitely get the 1.2" ones. You will never rub there is still plenty of space as this is not a car...

Adjusting rear links

I just installed the self leveling 1.2 h&r springs and the back suspension is horrible. I was about to throw back on my old springs or get the kw v3 until I saw this thread.

When you adjusted the rear links, did you have to remove the link to adjust or did you adjust while the link was still attached? The car shop that installed for me is closed weekends and may be for Columbus Day and this bouncy ride in the rear is really bothering me and I want to fix it as soon as possible. Thanks for the advice in advance.

Just unbolt one end of the link and that allows you to adjust it. It's about a 10min job to do oth sides.

Make sure you do the both the same! I had the same issue but I went back to the installer unfortunately because I couldn't get both rear sides the same. They also were adjusting something in my computer as well as adjusting the links. After all said and done I have no issues with mine.. How low is your rear end now? Any pics?

It worked! I tried doing myself but didn't feel comfortable being that far underneath the car with only one hydraulic jack. Every time you move the link the car wants to go up or down which is a little scary when your head is under this huge car. But I took in into the shop, they lengthen the link 2 mm or 2 full turns and it made a huge difference in the ride. It took them 5 minutes. Apparently H&R recommends 65mm links, but 67mm seems like the optimal settings. I wonder if the people complaining about the harsh ride just had their rear link too low. Anyways now my front and back fenders are both 30.25 inches from the ground. Before the back was 29.75. I'll try to post pics of before, after, and more after.

I never even jacked mine up, just rolled under from the back with a creeper. Unbolted gave it two turns and bolted it back up x2 done in less than 10min. I didn't have the key on me so the self leveling did not kick in at all.

Thread revival!

Sylvan, are you now happy with the 2" drop after adjusting the links?

I love it. I put 22's in recently while still on the stock suspension and it felt stiff as I expected since I've got such a thin sidewall. After putting the springs on, it rides just as nicely as stock when it was still on 20's, which I'm pleasantly surprised. The only time I can tell it's lowered is going over speed bumps where I can feel it kinda bounce, but for daily driving, it rides fine. Took me about 4hrs at my buddies shop. Oddly the wheel to fender gap is perfect on dead level concrete, but ANY kind of inclines, angles, etc and the gaps are all over the place lol. The pic below is fresh after the install, I've since lowered it a little more and I'm not getting any of the bouncing others have mentioned since I didn't do the front rake everyone suggested to fix said bouncing. Got them from a vendor here for $150 shipped...$3.5k coilovers are outta the question!

What springs did you go with? 150 shipped sounds super Chinese lol... also did you get a alignment after you installed the springs?

Bought from a vendor here, r33_RGSport. I love how I didn't over pay and suddenly it's Chinese lol. Theyre H&R 2" springs with lowering links...nothing Chinese about that. Yes, I did a lifetime alignment through Firestone where it's recommended to come back every 6k...sounds excessive, but I usually only go twice a year, before and after Bimmerfest since that's the time I drive the truck the hardest.

Lol sorry I figured they were a different brand as you didn't mention h&r but that is a great deal, half the price as others I wonder how he does it.. Does he also sell 1.2s? Does firestone use stock x5m alignment specs?

H&R thread, so I assumed the brand was a given. Yeah, I saw the price and jumped on it. I don't know if he has 1.2" since I only wanted 2". I've opened a couple tabs about lowering alignment specs because I'm curious about that as well. I lowered my E53 on BC Racing coilovers and still used the stock alignment specs, those cars have a bunch or rear camber stock but the X5M doesn't have that. I don't know if it's the Pirelli tires in 22's or that there's not much rear camber in an X5M, but my cornering confidence is WAY down in the X5M.

PS - X5M pics below are stock suspension with Niche 20's that were on it when I bought it, X5 is iForged 20's with the BC Racing coilovers.

Fair enough I will try to pm him to see if he has 1.2"... I feel ya on the cornering confidence but I think it's the higher point of gravity/more body roll vs coilovers like all my other cars have...

The coilovers were a fairly stiff and bouncy ride, but it was the first time I've ever owned a vehicle with them and they only cost $1000, gave me the stance I wanted, so I was happy. I said screw that when I saw KW's $3.5k pricing, and being they're the only coilovers I can get, I wasn't going to do anything suspension wise...then I saw how cheap those springs were. The X5's 20" tires would rub the plastic fender during hard cornering while using soft settings, but if I cranked them to the hard settings, then it'd be fine. I'd like another inch or so on the X5M, but I'll see how it does handling and rubbing during hard switchbacks...but I can't complain for what I paid since it's sitting nicely finally.

I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on the H&R's with a 2" drop.. How are you finding yours?

Did you run into the same issues as others with a 1.2-1.5 drop with the rear making it a crappy bouncy ride? I'm running OEM 19's but I'm looking at 22" once my tires are spent. I live in FL so I don't see speed humps and the roads are pretty perfect.

The stance on your M car looks perfect imo

All this reading has me convinced. I ordered the H&R 1.2" kit from ECS Tuning.

I also ordered the Dinan shortened bump stops. No idea if they are needed, but don't won't to deal with taking the suspension off more than once.

I've fiddled with the suspension myself on nearly every car that I have owned, I don't think the X5M is going to be too difficult.
