Sorry, I haven't hit 100K miles yet.. Just now hitting 75K miles in my 2012 X5 XDrive 50i, however, I've been looking for a place with information on high mileage X5 50is, so thanks for this thread!

I purchased the truck last summer at 68K miles and my mechanic acted like I was crazy for purchasing a 50i at such high mileage... At any rate, I did have some issues about two weeks after I purchased-- Noticed some minor oil leaks. When my mechanic took her apart to investigate, he performed some other needed repairs as well. Here's what I've got so far:

- Upper and Lower oil pan gasket replaced
- Replaced 2 engine mounts
- Replaced 3 coolant lines
- Replaced oil pressure sensor (apparently causing some of the leakage I was seeing)

I LOVE this truck and hope to drive it until the wheels fall off. So any tips or advice for high mileage X5 50is is much appreciated!

Valve guide seals are the big one for the 50i. It's a $9,000 job at the dealer. Your mechanic may charge less, but will still be expensive as the motor has to be dropped out completely.

Do you have a warranty? If not I'd heavily consider one since you plan to drive it for the long run.

Questions,...did you repair the Transfer case or Replace it? If repaired,..what was(were) the part(s) replaced. Just curious.

That isn't directed at you, just a general comment. There are a lot of members here who make comments about expensive repairs on these vehicles. That should be expected given the cost new. These are not $30-$40K Hondas, the parts and repairs are going to be more. There are some people here who seem surprised/caught off guard by that.

Exactly! No one here wants to buy a set of tires for a Bugatti Veyron! And that's zero mechanical issues!

2012 BMW X5 50i, 115k, love it but its been a pain to own:

both rear air struts
both front strut housings and struts
auxillary fan (intermittent overheating message, even after the waterpump replacement)
water pump
all coils and plugs
quart of oil every 700 to 800 miles
replaced heater hose due to a bad repair, didnt clip the host back so the steering knuckle wore through it, was scared that it was a turbo coolant line.
HID bulbs and halo about to go (intermittent on halo, bulbs are discoloring)

need to replace the bulkhead covers and gasket
need to replace lower and upper oil pan gaskets
Have a thread opened on how the car is shifting a little hard and idle is not smooth, dont know if it is missing, vacuum leak, no CEL.

Love the car the way it looks (msport), but would not have bought if i would have had this much trouble with the car at around 100k miles and beyond.

Its more of mileage, in my case

both rear air struts first one at 85k, 2nd one at 95k (sagging on one side slow leak)
both front strut housings and struts 95k
auxillary fan (intermittent overheating message, even after the waterpump replacement) 100k
water pump 97k
all coils and plugs 113k
quart of oil every 700 to 800 miles - around 95k
replaced heater hose due to a bad repair, didnt clip the host back so the steering knuckle wore through it, was scared that it was a turbo coolant line. doesnt apply
HID bulbs and halo about to go (intermittent on halo, bulbs are discoloring) - 114k

did u do any modifications to the multimedia unit recently?
the reason I'm asking as I had similar issue when I replaced my CIC screen and had to unplug cables behind the multimedia unit,
apparently I didn't plugin something completely in so after I put everything together my steering wheel stopped adjusting.
After I revisited and checked the connections (unplug, plug back in) the issue went away.

hope this helps

You can code out the auto movement. I'll have to dig up the command. Can't do it through Carly so will need to use something else.

I just purchased a X5D with 113K miles. We'll see how this goes.

Mine threw a code one time and the auto memory stopped working for a while. When BMW cleared the code it kept working, so

Great thread, thanks for all the information. I wanted to know if there was any more information surrounding 2012 X5M reliability. I’ve always loved the X5 and am finally in a position to shop for one...albeit used. Looking ate one with 50k so don’t think I’ll have an option to buy a warranty. Any significant known issues that I should be aware of?

Smile 190,220

I just hit 1902XX, and honesty, my 07 x5 3.0 has been easier to maintain than any other BMW I've owned (04 545I and 06 325I). Maintenance I've had done includes:
Water pump replaced at 70,877 miles
Rear brake, pads, sensor, and fluids changed at 77,540
Left tail light at 93k due to some condensation inside the housing
Front and rear rotors/pads changed at 150,853
Battery/Coolant reservoir changed along with flush at 153,119 due to crack in reservoir
Oil filter adapter seal/gasket replaced, valve cover and valve cover gaskets replaced at 168,971
Air bag recall done at 181,000
Fuel system and cooling system cleaned/serviced at 184,528
I just changed the starter myself a couple miles ago, along with the front brake pads and sensors. I'm also going to to the ignition coil pack and spark plugs soon, along with a new battery. I forgot to mention the oil/filter changes but I did them every 5-7k miles. I can post a pic of my odometer if you guys don't believe me lol but everything else works just fine, and the interior looks great as well, including the backs of the 3 rd row seating. It's probably the best vehicle I've ever earned, and if you take care of it it will take care of you

That being said, maybe those who chime in can provide some insight as to how much highway driving the vehicle sees.
Towing seems to also help with avoiding CBU (carbon build up) in the 35d. I have a 2011 with 136,xxx miles on it, and I LOVE it!! I get 28 - 30 on interstate (if I keep it under 75mph), it tows like a beast, its comfortable and extremely safe feeling. All that said I unfortunately have to put it up for sale due to a pretty substantial life change that I'm about undertake. I'll be listing it in the classified section once I'm given permission.

Agreed! It’s a great tow vehicle even though it’s not commonly used as a tow rig.

I have a 2012 xdrive50 and get really bad mileage. What did you do to raise your mileage that high?
