So what's the deal with the transfer case repair? Chain? Clutch disks?

I have a 2012 with 148,000 miles

A bit of smoke on start up but only if it sits for 5 days.

Light vibration when turning so transfer case but which parts need replaced?

Bad comfort access driver door handle

Oil pan gasket leaking bad enough that leaves spots on the ground

I had a 2012 5.0 with a 106k miles when both wastegates on the turbos went. I faced an $8k repair bill only 6,000 after CPO warranty. Took a trade for $10k and moved to a 2017 F15....this new car rides awesome.

wonder how many x5m are over 120k on here. I see a small amount but wonder if i should consider trading my x5m in for a newer x5m 3-4yrs down the road, if the x5m wont be worth it to keep after 100k miles

My advice is that once the warranty runs out time to get rid of car or face a big repair bill...there are many parts that can fail and cost thousands to fix. My lesson was learned on my 5.0.

I don't know your exact situation and what you paid for what parts/repairs, but in general, expensive repairs should be expected with an 80K vehicle, IMO.

That isn't directed at you, just a general comment. There are a lot of members here who make comments about expensive repairs on these vehicles. That should be expected given the cost new. These are not $30-$40K Hondas, the parts and repairs are going to be more. There are some people here who seem surprised/caught off guard by that.

My 2012 5.0 had 106k miles before both wastegates on turbos went. Before that nothing unusual. Water pump, HPFP, plugs and coils I did myself every 30k miles (plugs only, coils at 75k miles) oil change every 3-5k miles.

Trying an independent for the first time. Normally do the dealership but am less and less impressed with their interest to trouble shoot and problem solve. They just want you in and out as fast as possible and will tell you anything to do so.
Any updates?

Yea, sorry, should have came back quicker.

Took it to the shop, they swapped Tcase fluid and did an oil change.

So far it seems the Tcase fluid has helped tremendously! The jerk motion when coming to a stop has gone away and I think a majority of the vibration has died down pulling from a light. That said I don't think it has totally disappeared.

They did their massive review of the vehicle and came back saying they wouldn't replace anything or nothing looked out of sort. Was surprised but good news I guess. I do need to go back to them and try to get a better balance job on the tires as I think that will solve a piece of it. From there I might have them look at the drive shafts. Front shaft has an extended warranty I believe that I might still be able to use at the dealership. Will have to dig through paperwork. Otherwise I think I will possibly have them start replacing engine mounts and things along the way during every visit.

They also used 5w-40 liquid moly oil instead of the OEM 5w-30 stuff that it has had it's entire life. Looking to see if that slows down the oil usage at all. Ours has never been bad but it seems to be increasing now that we drive in more stop and go traffic.

I'll keep everyone up to date as she goes and hope it helps someone. I think today or tomorrow I am pulling the trigger on getting back into a BMW though with a 2015 X5M. The Q7 was nice but a bit too boring for me after having the E90 M3. Looking forward to seeing how well it holds up for 120k miles.

I bought my 50i in the middle of February with 87k. I just ran over 100k today. I have done plugs and a downstream O2 so far. I do have other little things to address though. I bought this truck with my eyes wide open. If I had gone for a Trailblazer SS or Jeep SRT8, I believe I would be having similar near 100k issues. I got the BMW for cheaper then those would have been at the mileage, and I believe it a bit nicer, and a bit more conspicuous. I am still pleased with her.

I see tons of people that make that comment when it comes to these vehicles so this is not directed at you but just in general. I can't speak for everyone when it comes to complaining about repairs. As far as i go i have an issue with the timing on repairs in some instances. You mentioned "these are not $30-$40K Honda's" and your correct so i expect more from a car that costs double the price. If a $30-$40k car can make it to damn near 100k miles sometimes more without needing anything other than basic maintenance why can't a car that cost double the price.

Now before i get bombarded by loyalists i am on my second BMW i have owned 1 american car and 9 cars from the asian market. 4 or my asian market vehicles were Acura. 2 out of the 4 had premature issues before even hitting 50K so by no means are they perfect. 1 instance the last acura i owned torque converter went at 20K miles. The other 2 were solid along with most my other cars needing very little upkeep.

Now on to my BMW's first was a 2011 535xi purchased CPO with 45,000 miles within the first months vanos was going caught it before it went.. covered.. Was not deterred because after that no issues what soever just basic maintenance..

Needed a bigger vehicle went with my current 2013 X5 just purchased this vehicle in Dec 2016 44k miles CPO..2 months ago headed on my usual drive i get "Engine Malfunction Reduced Power" turns out to be the Eccentric shaft went. Fast forward to this month usual running around "engine overheated" warning comes on couldn't drive car had to call roadside assistance.. Water pump went..Covered by warranty but thrust bushings and control arm links that are shot not covered which i knew but car just hit 51k miles...

And this is the vehicle my wife thought was a better idea to take on a road trip from New York to South Carolina then back when she has a Lexus RX350. Glad we didn't take the X5 but the fact that i am afraid to take a car that cost more money on long road trip says alot and should not even have to be a concern..

By no means are there many vehicles now adays that are as solid as they once were with even toyota dropping in reliability but i just feel if i am paying more for something i should have to worry less.

If things need to be replaced at 80k, 100k i could live with that because that means it will most likely take me to 80k, 100k again but at 40k,50k or 30k in some instances then that's a problem for me especially if its expensive...

I live and operate differently then the large majority of people. Having all the mechanical work experience I have also allows me a bit of wiggle room for my rides, hence the other old junk that I own. The BMW replaced the Tbird as the DD in my life. A few years before that, my F250 was my DD. In between those I drove a lifted 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 318. This is the first 'nice' ride I have had since high school, and I bought it for baby duty exclusively. Now my wife and I take it everywhere, I am on track to run over 30,000 miles this year.

I just have a bad taste in my mouth after my wife's GC. That is why I made this jump to BMW. I have always been quite fond of BMW since I was a kid, this being my first, I think I will have a steady regiment of BMW's in the future.

Just rolled over 100k in my wife's X5d a couple of days ago. Bought it three years ago with 65k on it and it's been great. It's tuned/deleted, so all the common points of failure are gone. I do 7500 mile oil changes, and have changed out the F/R diff, TC, and trans fluid. That's really been it, knock on wood. I get a pretty consistent 26MPG in mixed driving, closer to 30MPG if strictly highway.

You change the plugs and coils every 30k? What about water pump? Do you change the WP at a certain interval?

Sounds like a bad idea to me.

I also wont be changing my coil packs out until they misfire.

This is generally a good idea but I have first hand experience at replacing all of them instead of waiting for them to fail one-by-one.

The smoothness in the engine in acceleration, etc was much better after replacing them all

How about this for a reasonable strategy:

1 failed coil - replace it
2nd failed coil - replace the remaining coils with new ones

ya that works a bit better for me.

My car just threw a number 1 misfire code yesterday, I may be due for a coilpack, so we may have a practical application of this practice.

So I have a 10/s63 X5M, AA tune, exhaust mod, problems here and there but I drive it hard. Took it past the 170mph and constantly take across country live in Az and the farthest I've driven is FL. I do have some issues like an oil leak that is being fixed as we speak. They thought at first was the oil suction but turns out it might be the valve cover seal. great. I replaced my plugs just last week, not to hard.

My wife's 2011 50i just hit 90k...only problem since owning it for the past 4 years now has been adding a quart of oil every 1-2k miles

I have only put 11k miles on my 2011 x5m in the past 2 years with zero issues...it's currently at 64k miles but spends most of its time in the garage under a cover lol
