I certainly hope so. I derived a very aggressive and aspirational build scope in hopes that if greatness is not achieved, damn good will have been!

UPDATE

5.5.17:**UPDATE**

ESS SC installation underway. As expected, some customization is required to fit the kit; specifically, the relocation of the power steering reservoir. ESS has taken a keen interest in the project given that this is the first known attempt to super charge the N52 on the X5 platform, and have proven quite helpful to the shop performing the work. The exhaust fabrication efforts is also underway. The project should be completed next week upon the installation of the BBK, coilovers, wheels and angel eyes upgrade.

The blower is a lot bigger than I pictured...at least it fits in the bay. It doesn't look like too much trouble for the reservoir though...fabricated a couple of brackets and maybe a longer hose? I know most of those hoses are solid and not flexible so I'm probably understating. They were a pain to move around when I dropped my subframe before. Will you be able to share all the info for the fabrication? Would be useful in determining if it's worth the trouble. Of course, after your pioneering, ESS might decide to just make an E70 kit.

What all are they doing to the exhaust? I wasn't sure I heard the final decision.

Looking great! I get way too excited when I see this thread bump to the top

Ha! Your excitement is an inspiration to continue updating the journal. I will share all details on the fabrication as soon as the job is complete and the shop discloses such to me. As for ESS, I suspect they will design an e70 kit as I am doing all of the R&D on their behalf

Specific to the exhaust, we are removing the mufflers and resonators and installing Akra-styled carbon tips.

UPDATE

5.9.17:**UPDATE**

The SC installation continues. In addition to relocating the power steering reservoir, we had to move the positive terminal and fabricate a custom coolant reservoir. The fabrication work is quite nice. Filling said reservoir will be a bit burdensome, but it can be accessed from the top. Thus far, no impediments to a successful installation have been identified. Oh and the wheels have yet to arrive; they are now 8 weeks delayed to the original delivery date But alas, such will all be forgotten upon project completion.

Paint and Body

All,

As promised, attached are several images chronicling the paint and body phase of the project. RJ did a fastidious job of taking hundreds of photos for the purpose of this journal. In reviewing them sequentially, the labor intensity of the process is striking; in particular the method of removing the texture from the plastic components. As I have stated many times, RJ is assuredly the best at his craft in CA, and I would posit that he is in the 95th percentile nationally. He rendered a masterpiece. Enjoy!

I'm quite sure it will feel like a brand new car once the project concludes and I actually drive it; but thank you!

Eek! That's some legit fabrication on the coolant reservoir...it may have just jumped into the not realistic for me range. I'll just stay super jealous from my computer chair. Your truck is looking really good!

Don't write the project off just quite yet. I do not believe the fabrication effort was that costly and will share such as soon as I review the final invoice for work done. As I stated when beginning this project, much of the scope falls within the "why on earth would you ever" realm of impracticality (and hence the fun), but the SC appears quite doable on even limited budgets. More to come soon!

Update

Traveling, hence the truncated update: wheels are in, FINALLY; as such the BBK installation begins immediately. SC install all but complete. Given the extensive paint and body work, I decided to proceed with the clear bra front protection install. With this, I do not expect the vehicle to be done prior to Friday.

Looking good. You working a way to enclose the intake or feed air from the kidney shrouds?

Yes, we are attempting to fabricate a shroud. Routing air from the kidneys could be quite difficult given space constraints, without fashioning something that would be less than befitting...

Update

Getting closer yet; the project will conclude next week. SC complete, coilovers complete. The exhaust is looking quite slick, excellent fabrication craftsmanship. We eliminated the resonators and are running new pipe from the cats to a custom muffler. Importantly, all connection points are in OEM locations, seamless. The BBKs will be done on Monday. As for scope creep, as compared to the original idea of carbon fiber wrap on all interior panels, we are having said panels painted gloss black. The build will end with a frontal clear bra installation. I'm somewhere between excited and fatigued, but can see the end of the road as the crow flies...

Quite a journey! Almost done though! You should see about painting those calipers too. Silver and gloss for a clean OEM look or paint match...not that you want to wait any longer lol...there is always one more thing.

Is it possible to just remove the brushed alminmum section out of the running boards? Curious how these are attached, and how you removed them. I would love to pull mine and possibly have them wrapped in gloss black or something. The more my car develops, the less I like the look of the silver on the running boards.

What is the suspected power output of this? Debating on doing this to my 4.8 (not sure if I would look for a roots or centrifugal.)

It is possible as such were removed, sanded and painted a satin gun metal color. I have no idea how to actually remove them, but you can call RJ of RJ's Paint and Body in Pleasanton; he would be glad to inform as to the process. I do know that some care is required as they are susceptible to deformation (bending).

Thanks! The ambitiousness of the build has become increasingly apparent as the project conclusion nears. Every time I do one these, in the aftermath of fatigue, the words "never again" are muttered repeatedly. And then, a few months later, I am scoping yet another absurd project. It's a disease without a cure, one that I am happily afflicted with

The SC will add around 100 whp with the custom tune from ESS; nearly a 40% improvement over stock. It should be quite noticeable.
