They tried to get me at the beginner saying that I was modified but now it's under the knife and sounds like I will be picking up sometime this week.
It's being at the dealer for little more than a month now. Looking forward to c my beast again in a good note

Dealer covered everything so far

Just happened to me on my 2013 x5 50i. Drive shaft failed at 65mph straight-and-level on the highway and beat the hell out of the underside of my vehicle before punching a hole and impaling itself into my transmission.

Sounded like the end of the world happening just beneath the vehicle.

BMW is covering the whole thing, and the costs are already over $30,000 in damage (and may rise substantially because the tech says there is a possibility they might end up having to replace the engine - which is a $20,000 part). This might end up a 50k-60k repair.

Nobody warned me about this. I even had the vehicle into BMW fairly recently and had them fix something unrelated, and made sure to ask if it had any pending recalls or "not quite a recall but it's actually a recall" bulletins that needed to be checked out. They made it clear that I was good to go.

I'm just glad they're covering it... But I fear the potential damage. The engine (for example) was running extremely rough as the car came to a stop (making horrible noise and sputtering/barely running). They say they might not have to replace the engine based on the damage, and given the already fragile nature of the n63, I'm obviously a little butt-puckered about what might have happened to it and what that might mean down the road if they DON'T replace it.

Sorry to hear about more failures, it is scary has hell when this happens at highway speeds. Glad this is now a full blown recall. As I mentioned, my dealership had 3 in during the week mine failed. All 3 needed new engines. I think the risk of keeping this under wraps finally outweighed the cost of replacing engines....finally. Or, the NHTSA came in and forced them do make the recall. At least your driveshaft got impaled and didn't go flying up in the air at 70 MPH in rush hour traffic.

So now a new problem. My active steering malfunction has gone off a few times. I have reset with the steering wheel trick, but it has happened 3 times in the last month. Now I am getting vibrations on and off around the car. Sometimes it feels like it coming from the back, sometimes from the front. From my understanding, this malfunction happens when new software was programmed or when an alignment was done. Both were done on my repair. They couldn't get the car off the tow truck because all of the hydraulics were lost, so they had to put sliders in and pretty much drag my X5 off the truck. Needless to say, it messed up the alignment. Of course, they didn't figure this out and I had to send it back with no fluid in my radiator after a cooling hose "malfunction".

So I am trying to diagnose this vibration. It honestly scares the hell out of me. I have ZERO confidence in this car right now with so many thing going wrong. I plan to dump it as soon as the warranty is up next year. I even checked all the wheels to make sure they were properly tightened. That is how much confidence I have in my local dealership. I plan on just stopping by a tire shop to do a balance, but I don't think that is the problem. I have some nice Forgestar wheels, all weights are still on, and they are only a year old. And, the alignment was just done a month ago. No irregular tread issues on the tires. The vibration is not coming from the steering wheel, but from the body.

At this point, I am wondering if there are more issues with the drive train. The vibrations are sporadic and come and go. It feels like it is just a bad part of the road, but then it keeps going after changing lanes, getting onto a new road etc. Sometimes at lower speeds, sometimes at higher speeds. Really trying to figure out the culprit before I have to take it back in for the 100th time. Any ideas?

Sorry I just read this. My dealership told me that anything that the driveshaft touched would be replaced no questions asked. Your dealership is definitely trying to jack you on this. Sounds like it is figured out, but a month? I was less than 2 weeks start to finish and they needed to send out for parts and engine. Not good.

I hope all is well when you pick it up and they remember to re-attach all hoses. Ugh.

I got a letter on the extension of the warranty but nothing on an official recall.
Do the drive shafts have different part numbers between regular E70 and M variant? You'd think that a more powerful vehicle would be even more prone to the problem.

EDIT: Just checked on Real OEM and the part number for an X50i and X5 M are the same for the front drive shaft.

The M shares a lot of the same parts as a normal X5.

BMW is just screwing the S63 owners and not including them in many of the recalls on other E70's or N63 engine.

One would think they would considering the M costs that much more but then again there are not as many of the road so they can probably get away with it.

This driveshaft issue has me really worried and when I look up recalls on my VIN it only shows the airbag with no remedy yet available ... go figure.

What happens if my driveshaft breaks and the nearest BMW dealer is 4+ hours away and I'm 50k miles out of warrenty?

Yeah, M owners are the red-headed stepchildren, that's for sure.

If I remember correctly, the extended warranty on the front drive shaft was extended to 10 years/120K miles...sounds right, but may not be...it's in the letter somewhere.

I would hope that BMW would cover the shaft, if it was to fail, AND the damage it caused...seems like a failure on the highway destroys the whole drivetrain (i.e., engine, transmission, etc.).

This may not be the case, but I'd expect it. I'm in a 2011 with 60K miles but if I was closer to a 100K, which I imagine some owners are, I would run.

Anyone with an M that had this issue? Did it damage anything besides the shaft itself? Did BMW cover everything? Did you have trouble getting them to cover it?

Real OEM:
01 DRIVE SHAFT ASSY FRONT L=709MM 1 04/2010 02/2013 26207597649 ENDED, +core
01 DRIVE SHAFT ASSY FRONT L=709MM 1 04/2010 26208605866

Looks like both parts have the same manufacturing starting date but one was discontinued. I guess it's safe to assume that if you can make sure you have 26208605866 installed on your car, you should be fine...theoretically...

According to Real OEM, that seems to be the updated part.

26208605866 is what I have on my car and I'm at 110k miles and it looks like new, no where or any sort of play. Not that it won't fail but I'll probably change mine at 120k miles just in case .

Nothing I'd love more than it to fail and get a new trans and engine out of the deal if it damaged them. . But so far it's stable and no vibrations.

I'll go under and look for the part no. just came fack from a 3k mile trip - Car was loaded to the point I couldn't see in rear view mirror & I caught myself doing 120 sometimes ... now when I think of what 3 series folks are doing, remove the front drive shaft completely in the summer time ... may throw some code but both sides are sealed (front diff & center TQ - atleast 335 ones are), hey I just put 3k into the car on tune and exhaust etc

From what my dealer told me they had a production date where their was batches made that where failing and 2012 models Were not affected. However 2010 and a few months of 2013 where effected.

Who knows the way I see it if I have over 100k miles and it's still good it may have failed a while ago if it was. But as long as it's covered I still have 10k miles worth of warranty on it so if it fails I get new stuff. If it doesn't I'll just replace it when the 10k miles are up and chalk it to maintenance.

I gotta believe this is going to be a $15-$20k repair at this point. They said they ordered the parts including engine with overnight delivery and estimated mid next week for completing the repair. 9 or 10 days on this repair seems really optimistic.

I plan on taking a look at the damage with my own eyes tomorrow and taking some picture to at least understand what is going on. Who knows what other type of damage there might be. I just have a feeling this will be more than a 1 visit repair before things are somewhat back to normal.
Any updates ?

Replaced my transfer case over the weekend and noticed that my vehicle also had a driveshaft failure at some point, check out the chewed away aluminum on the trans, it's flaked up at the top.

Must have been a lucky one as their was no real damage other than part of the trans being worn away.

The scary thing is mines a 2012 and not part of the recall. Nor did it fall into the production month of the faulty drive shafts. So this means others may be affected even if your not part of the recall.
