just called Rallye BMW in NY and the advisor knows about the recall, said it's new. He was going to check my Vin# and see if my car is covered. He said they are only replacing them if they find issues with the injectors, u can't just get them replaced unless they go bad. Anybody know how many miles or how long they are extending this to?

Just picked up my truck and my friend said all my injectors were eligible to be replaced since they are index 9 and the latest version are index 12.

How can they only replace the injectors if you're having issues? what's the point of having a recall if only some will get them replaced...I've always been under the impression that a recall/sb meant ALL cars get the new parts

Well, according to the advisor I spoke to its kind of like our front drive shafts, we can't just take them into be replaced for the hell of it but if there is a failure it's covered from 10 years of the in service date or 120k. I don't know what term they put on the injectors but not everyone has injector issues so I doubt they are going to just take every x5m/ x6m and replace everyone's injectors without signs of failure. I wish they'd replace them for the hell of it but doesn't make too much sense, it's not a safety issue and not every car is going to develop issues.

I may be wrong here as I don't have solid info, this is just what this advisor told me.

One think to note is that BMW has no way of testing injectors. They can only be diagnosed by looking at A/F ratios and other signs. Even once removed, there is no 100% way to know that an injector has failed.

I'm not crazy about White Plains BMW, my buddy who's a BMW master tech does 99% of repairs I can't do, for recalls/sb I usually go to Greenwich

Is there a way to tell which index fuel injectors I have? would it go by build date or physically checking them myself? I only ask because I bought the truck from Carmax and even after having a PPI done before buying it, I was never told if they were replaced or not

I'm at BMW of Austin (TX) right now for an oil change and I brought this up to my SA, he told me it is not a recall but they are extending the injector's warranty to 120k miles.

Ok, I too spoke to my advisor, who is VERY good and very forthcoming with info with me. As an enthusiast/engineer, he appreciates that he can tell me how things are and explain technical stuff, VERY unlike 99.9% of BMW owners in South Florida... One lady with a 6 series makes them back up her car, as she says she can't do it...

Anyway, back on topic... I spoke to him at length, he looked into the SIB # posted above and does see it. He said it is a recall coming, and the bulletin reads for them to check all trucks. However, not all trucks will get replacements. They will be taking a borescope and using it to inspect the injectors, checking to see the index number. Those with Index 10 and lower will get them replaced. Index 11 and 12 will NOT be replaced.

The VIN range goes from 03/09 until late in 2013 (I forget the month), so it should cover ALL E70 X5M/X6M vehicles. After looking into my VIN, he says he does see something pending, so eventually my truck will be in for the work. So, it does not guarantee a free replacement, its all depending on the Index number of the injectors in the truck...

Much like the N63 customer care package that was recently done, this will take time to sort the vehicles affected, and accumulate the parts to each dealer. So, it will take some time, but I would expect in the next few months everything to be well underway.

Good luck to all!!

The index number can be found on the head of the injector after the BMW part number. Example: 13 53 758 5261-12. The nr. "12" is the index number.

I don't know if you can peek down there with a mirror and see the numbers ...

I wonder if the S63 injectors are different from the N63 injectors ...

I just tried looking but it's almost impossible to see the numbers w/o removing the injectors

Who can tell me how to foul up the injectors after I get the letter

I don't even think they have gotten to all the effected cars yet. When I called Bmw last night they said that it's going to take time for them to do them all, it's not a once and done thing. I think 98% of these trucks are effected it's just whether the issue happens or not. I think the injectors put in from 10-13 were probably almost all faulty eventually. At least if anyone has an injector issue even if the vin isn't put on this list, I would think Bmw would goodwill it. I'm sure eventually we will all get letters that it's covered up to 10 years 120k miles.

They need to replace diesel injectors too, that would be fantastic if it happened
