Getting an extended warranty for 2010 X5M
Ok People your input would be appreciated. Been going back and forth about getting a 2010-2013 X5M for several months and now I'm looking at a nice 2010 with only 49,500 miles and an extended warranty good to 75K miles/JAN 2020. Based on my previous experience with a BMW and the very helpful input of members in here, I most definitely want to get another extended warranty when it runs out. The question in my mind right now is whether or not it would be even be feasible to be able to get one considering the vehicle will be 10 years old when the current warranty runs out. The other thing to is obviously the older they are, the more expensive the warranty is going to be. Any thoughts would be appreciated! The one I'm looking at is at a very reasonable price. There is another one I'm looking at which is a 2012 w/ 68K miles and will cost around 3K more. Which one makes more sense? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Some one mentioned an EW costing about $100 a month for three years.See if you can afford that. Normally lesser the mileage the better. But the condition of 2012 model is also important, plus highway miles better then city miles

$100 per month would be just fine. It would really be down to how long and how much I can get a warranty for either choices.

It’s going to be very difficult to get a good exclusionary warranty on a 8 yr old vehicle.. Not sure where in WA you are, check out Brandon (finance mgr) at Landmark motors in Bellevue. He claimed to be selling good plans at cost + $100 (sold one to my friend who bought his x3 there at a good price; he hasn’t had to use it yet, so cant comment on the claims experience).

I have one for that price for my X5M. I am about to make a claim. I've been told that they probably won't cover things or they will just try to weasle out of the claim. But, the only alternative was the dealer, which was $7K CAD per year!! LOLLLL.

Update: I just found out two highly rated companies that will not warranty an X5M:
1. Endurance 2. CNA National Carchex offers 4 year top of the line warranty for US$ 7,500. Funny but not surprising. I got another offer from PRCO for $4,600 for 3 years but the company is rated an F with BBB. Looks like finding a decent company that will warranty an X5M for a decent price is a challenge or just not available. |

I've heard good things about CNA, but 1) you either have to buy through a dealer at the original point of sale, and 2) 'M' is typically excluded (if not BMW as a whole).
Another thread going on here - good luck... mine is through AUL and haven't been impressed much Extended warranty question https://www.xbimmers.com/forums/show....php?t=1551066 |

Guys and Girls, just got a quote from Autonation for their exclusionary, best warranty for $6000.00 for 5 years/48K miles.
Thoughts on Autonation's warranty? |

So Autonation's warranty is actually Red Shield Premier plus exclusionary. Any feedback please?

Let me chime in....I got all my BMWs used with no extended warranties after the manufacturer's expired. Let me explain my reasoning:
First of all, EA offered by third-party providers, there is always the possibility that the provider could go bankrupt, which would mean that your extended warranty may die with the company. If you prefer an extended warranty, go with BMW. Second, make sure you understand what is covered and what is not. A lot of threads here were created complaint about companies saying specifics repairs are not covered. Know precisely what is covered by your extended warranty, there are also limitations or exceptions. For instance, some parts may only be covered if the vehicle breaks down. That could mean that any parts that wear out due to “wear and tear” may be excluded. Third, know your deductibles. How much? Is it per visit, per parts repair? Fourth, another point to consider is whether the extended warranty is transferable. You may decide after a few years to give the car to your son or daughter, only to learn that the extended warranty does not transfer. This may be the least of your worries but anyone can be in this situation down the road. Lastly, check out Independent research about extended warranties if owners really benefit from it in MOST cases. Check out this survey conducted by the Consumer Reports National Research Center found that 55 percent of the people who bought an extended warranty never used it during the lifetime of the policy. The center also found that people who purchased such plans spent more for the coverage than what they received from the plan. Specifically, Consumer Reports found that purchasers spent an average of $1,214 on extended warranty plans, but only saved $837 on repairs. That’s a net loss of $377 for those who used their extended warranties. What's your alternative and cheap insurance? Instead of investing too much money for an extended warranty plan that may not pay off, you should consider other ways to ensure peace of mind. Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule. If you are a BMW enthusiast, roll your sleeve and get dirty and don't let other mechanics touch your car unless it's not possible for you. If you care for your car according to the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule found in your owner’s manual, then you’re likely to avoid significant repairs. Also, you can set up a car fund. Establish a savings account dedicated exclusively for the care of your car. If you ever face major repair costs, then tap the account. Unused funds can then be applied toward a down payment on your next new car.

Good points and Thank you but based on my research and consultation with the some of the crew here, it makes more sense to get an exclusionary warranty for an X5M even with regular maintenance. Same thing is said by a trusted and highly rated independent BMW shop specifically for an X5M. The deductible is $100. I change my own oil and change minor repairs and have a fairly good sense of how cars work but am not inclined to tackle anything more complex as I would rather have trusted expert do them on an X5M.

I would highly recommend an extended warranty on an bmw v8 x5. Both of mine have been extremely expensive to keep repaired.
I have an autonation gold 3/36 extended warranty with a 100 disappearing deductible. I have a 2011 x5m which when purchased had 40k miles. Since purchase in March of 2017. I’ve had the following repairs covered, Alternator replacement (including tow car was dead on side of road) Turbo oil block seal Rear main seal Valve cover seals Manifold pressure sensor (car in limp dick mode) Turbo oil lines Pcv vent lines Paid out of pocket for Filtered air ducts Battery (killed by alternator) The total for those repairs at the dealer has been about 12k all covered by the extended warranty. The filter air ducts and battery are not included. I still have a leaking oil pan gasket. None of these were an issue when I bought the car and had it inspected. All of these numerous oil leaks have cropped up in the last year of ownership. Rear main seal is very common in the x5m. In fact all of these issues are if you look, I paid 3500 + 300 in deductibles for 3x in coverage. Good investment if you ask me. Especially since the stealer warranties all repairs for an additional 2/24. |

I think there are good points to both side. I agree with Vitalitat's numbers and logic, I am going without a warranty on my 50i.
Warranties wouldn't exist if they didn't make money for the provider. Therefore they must take in more than they pay out. Which means odds are you will not get your money's worth. Then again to some the peace of mind of having coverage is worthwhile to them. I think V's points are good however, you need to understand all the terms of the warranty, I think most folks are surprised when their claims are denied.

Agree with the repair savings fund way. I took the KNOWN leadoff buying a 2012 V8 from BMW. The fun part is my payment went down by the amount of my savings fund.
Hopefully* I win out. Maybe I won't. But the EW way was more upfront for too few miles. Wish me luck.* . . . . . . . . . . . . . *In most cases I would be the first to tell you that neither HOPE nor LUCK is a good strategy. But buying the car I did is bad strategy to begin with. Just enjoying the ride. |

Get one!
I purchased a warranty from BMW directly through Crevier BMW in CA. It was a lot more expensive than a few 3rd party warranties I shopped, but I’ve heard horror stories with those so I decided to stay away. I got the “gold package” for about $6700 which extends my warranty to 7 years/100k miles.
I purchased a 2012 with 46k miles in 2015. So far I’ve gotten about $14k worth of service done under warranty and Im at about 82k miles. I did pay a $50 deductible each time which was about 5-6 services. E70 X5m is very expensive and it does seem to have its fair share of issues that are common. I don’t regret getting a warranty at all. Cheers Last edited by rx750boss; 11-20-2018 at 02:11 AM.. |

I bought 2013 X5M in December of 2015 with 35k miles still with factory warranty, by the May of 2016 my factory warranty was about to expire and I bought BMW extended warranty plan for $5000 until 100k miles or 5 years I believe. about 3 weeks ago I hit 100k miles so no more warranty for me and I'm not sure I'll be able to source one at this mileage even though the year of the car somewhat new.
Maybe I got lucky but I didn't have to file a single claim as I didn't experienced any major issues. The "minor" issues I had were not covered such as suspension components (ball joints) and front shocks which were aftermarket so no surprise. From this point on I'm keeping my fingers crossed...

Instead of gambling on luck, I would advise you to trade it in and get a more recent model. Get out of it while the going is good and you get a good trade-in value. |
