Blower Fan Speed Not Responsive

Searched quite a bit and haven't found much. I can increase the HVAC fan speed all the way up and seems it really doesn't change speed. However, if I put it on Defrost it will run full bore. Take it off defrost and back to no change with the button up or down - fan speed stays pretty much low and constant.

Thought it might be blower regulator, but thought I'd check with anyone else run into this.

Getting cold here in Chicago and need some fan speed.

Thanks in advance.

Garage List
Couple things...

1. If there's no heat in the engine it won't speed up the fan. Unless you are on defrost
2. Are you having trouble with battery or getting warning messages. The car might be protecting itself by shutting down the fan speed.

Hmm. Not number 1. But number 2 is possible. Right now I know I don't have the correct battery in the car (bought it that way) and occasionally I'm getting low battery warning messages. Dealer told me yesterday that battery was going and needed $600. Interesting protection circuit...managing fan speed. I wouldn't rule it out with this vehicle.

Thanks for the thoughts.

This happened to mine. I replaced the motor(not the regulator) and it fixed this. My fan was also squeaking for a wile before it quit, and it ended up doing what you described for a few days and then quit altogether.

My x5d when it was having battery drain issues and wouldn't let the fan speed go up till the battery started to charge up, so if your battery is weak then it could be doing the same thing mine was
