Power steering pump dead again

Having issues with my power steering again after replacing the pump 3 years ago in 2016 when the pump started shooting fluid out.

This time the pump makes a very loud knock inside the pump at certain times, steering is impossible while parking ...

The problem here is these fucking pumps cost 1500 and this is the second failure I’ve had, first was about 90k miles now this one again

What kind of BS is this BMW I’m seriously considering selling because of this, really tired fixing extremely expensive parts to break again and again especially when it takes 2 days to fucking replace.

Seriously how the f can these pump cost 1500 new and not be bulletproof - literally being charged through the nose because they only made these pumps special for this model so we can get fucked, dealer price is probably about 3-5k installed and the part has a 12/month warranty like that matters

Could it be a clog from somewhere down the line like in the hoses? Did you flush the system before?

I flushed and refilled the system previously with the old pump and this one just now when it started having issues - the pump has about 30k miles or so really unfortunate this keeps happening reliability is extremely questionable for some of these parts.

I’m questioning if I should replace everything with the steering at this point as maybe something else is causing the premature pump failure within the steering although I know it is going to be stupid expensive but maybe worth it at this point.

I might just let it sit for a bit since I’m pretty pissed off at the car now as I contemplate on selling it, fixing it or just setting it on fire.

Hey, Check out my thread I got everything replaced for much cheaper. I think unless you have active steering you can get part for around $200.

Im quite sure the OP have the active suspension(//M) which is why it cost over $1k. Mine is groaning and I was looking into a new pump. Guess I’ll hold it off for now, every part of these M have gold sprinkles in them.

Garage List
Comes with the territory, all I can say. As much as I love my X5M and I've never had a problem with it (1 year/10K miles later, knock on wood), I have no illusions of it being as bulletproof as a Lexus.

32416799278 - part number

It does not like having the pump bypassed....warning lights are triggered...

This entire steering system is really expensive to replace, I want to just replace it with something else entirely that I know will last longer this is not ok every few years.

I ended up taking it apart a bit and just lubricating the column and it’s back to somewhat working again.

Did you take the pump out? I can barely stick my hand back around column area to inspect anything. Last time i change the suction hose that goes from the reservoir to the pump, that seems/sounded like a 5 min job to a couple hour struggling to fit my hands back there.

I’ve been hating this truck not only because the quality is junk but the hassle you have to go through just to change a stupidly simple part, a part that shouldn’t have failed this early or at all.

No i just took the belt and pulley off, removed the fan and basically squeezed around with what room there is .... been working on the car for a while so I can get around it pretty well still end up with really bad scraps and cuts from the sharp edges everywhere, but what can you do when gloves and clothes won’t fit into the tight space.

I noticed an extreme amount of gunk and grime on the column joints I could see without removing anything and was able to spray a lubricant and cleaner on it directly with a little aim for now.

When u change the pump you need to take the front radiator out, bumper off etc etc ... it’s actually quite a bit of work since these is so little room everything must come out.

Very frustrating but that is why it costs so much to have work done and why I don’t trust anyone to do it

I am not sure if you are having the same issue I had in my X6 5.0 with Adaptive Drive, but I replaced my pump and Valve block(picture2) 3 times before realizing that expansion hose 1st section(picture1, item#23) was the problem. I did not want to spend $400 for that part alone. It has a filter inside and once it is clogged, you cannot get it clean-up.

JMX6V8 , that’s good to know that there is another filter. I have a feeling my is somewhat clogged but don’t know what else it could be besides the reservoir. The amount of hoses these adaptive drive have is crazy.

Let me know “IF” you need another new pump. I can get a brand new one sent out to you for around $1250

If your pump goes bad because of a leak, then you have this problem(see picture). After my third pump, I took the pump apart and since the o-ring was not cut I reused it. it has been over a year and the I have not had any issues after that. Here is a link to the instructions if you want to know more about this procedure. https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...upply/1LKkvzeg

Did you end up replacing the expansion hoses section 1? I don’t have a leak. But i do have bubbles in the reservoir. I bled it like a 100 times turning the wheel full lock to lock.
I vacuum test it and it holds vacuum.
I pressure test it and it holds pressure without any leaks.
But somehow air is entering the system. I bought new reservoir, 2 new hoses - to and from reservoir
Again, no leaks. The air is causing the moaning and whining. I have nothing else to suspect on.

I replaced the expansion hoses section 1 and performed a start-up/initialization function using ISTA. If you still have bubbles in the system, I would recommend you do a start-up function of the Dynamic Drive.

It will let you know if the system has air in it and what part of the system need to be bled.

I heard the next gen will do all that and then fix itself too.

OP - you DO have a CCA club discount, when ordering this part right?? Saved me hundreds of dollars over the years.
It's normally ~15% give or take, but some parts are discounted even more than that.
