e70 x5m transmission filter + fluid

I just recently got this car earlier this month. I recently noticed that when its cold, the car hesitates to go into reverse. When it does go into reverse, it sometimes stalls, or acts like its in neutral.

Fluid level was suspect at this point (could also be the rubber valve seals + bridge seal under the mechatronix unit).

So forward to today, the transmission sump pan was drained, lowered, cleaned. Filter was changed. electronic connector sleeve was changed, both magnets replaced (old ones had some particles on it, nothing too bad....

Bolted the pan back up, filled the fluid (about 3 Liters?) then went thru running the motor, shifting thru gears etc etc, finally ended up filling about 5 Liters total.

The car shifts butter smooth now, you can barely feel it go from 1,2,3,4,5,6 and down each gear. I need to test it while cold to see if the issue in reverse is still there or not but I already see an improvement in shifting.

My only concern is...Is 5 liters enough fluid? why do most of the DIY and or service kits have 7 liters of the lifeguard 6 fluid listed?

TIA.

Being that you did a drain and fill, there's a specific fill procedure that you need to Google vs ballparking an amount. In short the trans needs to be within a certain temp range and filled until it starts spilling out...too hot or too cold will affect that.

I'm thinking about emailing ZF and telling them about this AMAZING NEW TECH that allows you to check fluid level while the car is on the ground and EVEN fill it without spilling oil out the side like a damn white trash redneck (see what I did there). And This INCREDIBLE device would only add a few dollars to the cost of the car!!!!..... f@cking asshats...still can't believe a cars that cost as much as ours didn't include a damn dipstick....and if they did it because a dipstick is far to "pedestrian" then at least add in and electronic method... I mean another 100 dollars is not going to be noticed once your past 100k

Lol ya, it's very dumb to not have a dip stick or at least a fn level sensor.

SMH.

Yeah is suppose to be within 30 to 50, approx 40C when doing this. Above or below those marks it becomes invalid
