I'll pile on:
2012 50i with sticker price of $84k (build date Feb 2012)
I bought in April 2015 with 27k miles for 49k. That is three years old, but just over 40% off. Can you say Sweet Spot? I knew you could...

Would I buy my X5 50i again?

I would not.

Love the vehicle, love the power, love the look, love the drive, but let’s be real about this... bmw has billed more warranty work on this thing than the original MSRP.

That's why I'd buy again, BMW has paid for nearly everything on this vehicle between recalls and CCP.

It's just the inconvenience of going to the dealer so frequently. For some yah I get it, fortunately for me my dealer is just down the street from work.

[QUOTE=jiggz;24123686]Man you have an ax to grind huh!

I've had 4 BMW's over the last 17 years, never once had an electrical problem on any of them. I've had some other issues along the way, but mostly stuff to be expected on a used German car. What's the alternative, a problem free Toyota? Then I'm driving a boring appliance.

You have an extremely rare experience. No one, even my BMW service advisor, expects a BMW to be bulletproof like a Toyota. Speaking about a boring appliance, my GTR and Lexus GSF are very exciting and never had the problems I had with my 650i. Are BMW's problematic, yes. Do I still like them, yes, but with open eyes.

Nothing wrong with saying the truth about them.

Everybody’s got different experiences. I am on my fifth (‘11 35i). They have all been bulletproof, requiring only routine maintenance, most of which I wrench myself. I do, however, put on very few miles (@4k/yr).

No, since BMW is going to buyback it next month and give me 97% of my money back.
Fantastic vehicle, great ride, lots of torque and nearly all options. Only a few in the country like this in 2012.

Power dropped out infrequently only in hot weather and left very little trace. Dealer had it 4 times and has spent ~120 days total with over 100 of those working days. BMW engineers couldn't solve the issue and I didnt' want to die.
They had to buy it back since it occurred within the manufacturers warranty and never fixed it. I've been in a loaner since Halloween.
Probably 15-20k in parts alone they've thrown at the car. No messages on the dash at all. No other X5D's have a problem like this and I've looked for years to find someone who has the same issue.
Since it will go on auction afterwards, maybe the buyer will see this and it could be as simple as a temperature sensor malfunctioning at higher temps.

Knock on wood, my wife's 2013 35i X5 has been solid. No issues, other than a leaky oil filter housing (actually, not a leak, more like a hemorrhage) but aside from that, it's been perfect for 6 months and 5k miles, several long trips etc. We're planning on buying her an X5 M in the future but...with all these stories, I think I'll just get another 35i w/ the M package and call it a day. This drivetrain config does everything I need it to do.

Would I buy my 2011 X5 35i again? Absolutely NO!

Everything goes wrong with it.
Unfortunately, we are having problems with the heat/cooling system. Yesterday , I drove the car and after a few miles I noticed the heat was not getting very hot. Then I heard the radiator fan accelerate to a much higher rpm (sounds like a small jet plane). I pulled over and checked the antifreeze level and it was filled appropriately and it was also circulating (the small stream of antifreeze was flowing inside the antifreeze reservoir). I shut the car off and sat a couple minutes. I restarted the engine and again sat a few minutes to see if the radiator fan would accelerate to a high rpm again. The heater started to get warmer and the radiator fan didn't run at the high rpm, so I continued my trip. After approximately 10 minutes of driving, the radiator fan again accelerated into a high rpm and the heat inside the car cooled off again. I again pulled off to the side of the road and shut the car off, waited a few minutes, then restarted the car and drove home. At this point the yellow engine light came on the dashboard.

I just picked it up from the BMW dealer to have the valvetronic servo replaced for $2200.00 the day before.

Last year I had the computer and the main wiring harness replaced. I paid for the computer and BMW paid for the harness.
Just before that I had to replace the water pump.

My frustration with this car is very high. I've had it 3 years and only put 8000 miles on it.

sorry to hear about this

my previous car was 2011 X5 35i and I had no issues with it in a first couple of years even though I put 3 times more miles then you, then one month I had 3 major issues happened (driveshaft failure, AC failure, etc.,) all was taking care of by BMW free of charge but I got tired of waiting for AAA on the side of the road so I let that car go!

hope u'll resolve car's issues!

I've got a rather lightly optioned '10 X5 35d. Although I wish I had a leather dash/ HUD, I really have no regrets. It's an SUV with awd, great mpg's, and it's been reliable for me over the 4k miles I've owned it so far. I believe I've had it about a month even by now, and it's done some pretty long trips already!

Would YOU buy your X5 again? In all of my research I should stay away, but is that because I know too much? I have a high mileage 2006 4Runner and an M3. The M3 is what I try to drive the most but the 4Runner gets 2x the miles (bike rides in the mountain, weekend trips, etc) and I'd like something nicer, especially for passing and holding speed in corners through mountain passes.

2012-2013 35i with favorable options is what's on my radar. I know about oil pan leaking, oil filter housing leaks, valve cover replacement + gaskets. These don't phase me. What's going to leave me on the side of the road? What else is there to be aware of?

People trade in junk cars and I keep reading carfaxes of 3, 4 owner X5's that are not that old (getting 10k miles per owner, or less!), or see them passed around through 2-3 dealers up for sale for a year. I can get a PPI but honestly they may not catch anything I wouldn't (I'm reasonably proficient having done my own rod bearings on the M3 for example) and I'm worried about getting someone elses POS.

So, would you buy yours again?
I <3 my X5 35d, but if I had it to do over, I'd skip the third row that I just had to have when I bought mine. Other than that, no complaints. Best car (car, right?) I've ever owned!

I AM actually buying my X5 again....... well not the exact same one but I did have a CPO 2009 X5d that we bought in early 2012. Drove the doors off that thing ending up over 220k miles when we finally sold it a couple months ago.

I sort of regret selling it but it was my wifes daily and after the second injector crapping out on her driving home from work and stalling the car she wasn't comfortable driving it anymore. It was paid for and my truck isn't, so selling the X5 and paying off some debt was a better move with a new car parked in the garage already.

That being said; I got the itch pretty quick to get another X5d, nothing drives like that thing, especially when you delete everything and tune it.

So, this Friday I am flying down to NC to pick up a 2013 X5d with low miles and fully loaded with every option I wish we would have had on our last X5. Definitely looking forward to it. After I send it up to Matt Whitbread for a couple weeks I will sell my truck and be back in an X5 full time again.

At that mileage, the water pump/thermostat is prone to failure if it hasn't been changed before. The high electric fan sounds like it is a symptom for the water pump and along with the CEL if it was limp mode, then I'd say it's the water pump. I had mine go bad at 55k miles.

Not sure if I ever replied to this thread.

In between yes and no. I would maybe consider an X5D or X5M. I wouldn't touch the n62 or n63 again and some other issues that happened when I had my n62 was that the wiring harness in the door rotted away. Not a single slice in the grommet to suggest that water should have even gotten in there. A/C compressors are shit on these cars and oil is bound to leak at some point.. Only thing I considered solid was the transmission and I've heard they have had to been replaced before.

I'd pick up an X5 35D possibly for cheap just to have as a second car, they have good torque and great mileage. I wouldn't pay more than 10k for one if I even bothered.

I'm over here wishing I had the third row, so I could remove it and have the levelling suspension. I've heard I wont need it, but I do plan on towing 5500-6000 lbs behind the car twice- 3 times a month during track season.

I got my D for $4300, super cheap because it has the engine light on for emissions stuff that I'll delete anyway. Cracked windshield, and a broken off rear wiper. Needed a front wheel bearing too. I've replaced the wiper, and will be deleting as soon as I have the money after buying a trailer. The windshield already has another chip that's developing into a second crack, so insurance will cover that during the summer. Not to mention the 27-28 mpg I get on the highway currently....
If you're willing to get one that needs deleting, I've seen a few between 5-8k that are coming up for sale with emissions problems. If the D works out as a tow ehicle I'll probably look for a well equipped LCI one in a few years with emissions issues to replace this with.

This thing tows like a champ! Plenty of pull & very stable. I get around 18 mpg or so pulling the Jeep behind me. Ironically, I wouldn't get more than 12ish driving the Jeep, so it saves fuel to tow it. I'm selling my car hauler (brakes on both axles) if you are in the market. Feel free to shoot me a PM.
