How much is my X5 worth?
I have decided to move up to an F15 model and am wondering if it is worth the hassle of private party selling my E70 or just giving it to Carmax and be done. I know what you are all thinking - and yes, I know, I will always get top dollar if I take the dealers out of the mix. There is a hitch here though, no dealer, KBB or estimator can give you the value of a vehicle with a new engine. Simply put, dealers and the like don't care about a brand new, factory engine. They want to know the mileage and what it looks like, period. So what I have is an offer for $10K from Carmax, which is kinda fair, but not if you take into account the new engine installed just 2K miles ago by BMW. (Due to the Bang settlement). The vehicle breaks down like this:
2011 X5 M Sport Never modified 70K miles VIN # 5UXZV8C52BL417070 Black sapphire, black interior Premium sound Exec package Adaptive suspension Really, it has just about every option I believe. In terms of condition, I would rate it a strong fair to kinda Good. It has a couple of dings, mild scratches, chipping from the 20" M wheels. headlight yellowing, etc. Never been in an accident. Driven mildly as a second vehicle. It has the tow package. I think I could get $15K but I don't want to spend the time or have the hassle of dealing w/ bank, dmv, etc. That being said, I am strongly considering giving it to Carmax and walking away with a check for $10K, placing a value on my time and headache of $5K. To trade or not to trade? Am I valuing the vehicle correctly? The engine replacement alone was close to $20K value. Last edited by chadism; 09-06-2019 at 05:04 PM.. Reason: Add mileage and VIN |

I'm in the same boat as you - about to move into an F15 (or F85). I've never traded a car into a dealer, it feels like throwing $ away and I actually enjoy selling vehicles.
With that said the 50i seems like a challenging vehicle to sell. I don't believe there's much demand for them, so the idea of trading it in despite losing $ does sound somewhat appealing to me. I see them listed for sale on this forum and they aren't fast sellers by any means... usually multiple price drops, and who knows if they actually sell in the end? On the flip side, you might actually have better luck on Autotrader, Craigslist, Cars.com, etc. where people may not know all of the 50i's issues. I always tell myself in regards to selling privately 'you only need 1 buyer!' I think 15K is a good starting point for yours - gives you a little room for negotiation. It wouldn't hurt to list it here and Craigslist for free - if you get no traction after a few weeks, you have the option to trade it in. It's missing some packages/options based on the VIN decoder, but it's got most of the stuff people want. Keep in mind too, some people are weirded out my engine replacement or paint work, even though the vehicle is safer/more reliable/better condition than before. |

I'll be honest. I think at the top end you can get 18k. But nothing lower than 15k for sure! There will be a buyer at 18k if you explain the engine situation!

I have an ‘11 35i with the Sport Activity package, 59k miles, Platinum Gray/beige leather, immaculate. I’ve been looking at the Macan S, but have been laughed at when I tell dealers I want @ $12k on trade. I know they’ll turn around and advertise/sell it close to $18k, greedy bastards.

Since it has a brand new engine., its worth lot more then the trade-in value of a usual X5 of your specs.
Keep it as a spare car or give it to Carmax for a hassle free cash deal., if you need the 10 k |

From a tax standpoint you get the net of tax if you trade to your dealer I think. Not sure where you are how it works in US but in Canada if you trade in your car say for $20k and there is a 5% sales tax then if you buy a $50k car you only pay tax on the difference of $30k. So it might be worthwhile to see if the dealer you're buying F15 can match the carmax value for trade in.

I will give you $10,001 where should I send the check?
Honestly you basically have to sell to a private party the stealership will kill you on a trade in. Sometimes I wonder what they make more money on the new car or flipping the trades... Selling yourself isn't so bad you just have to avoid scams and spend the time showing it to people. I recommend doing money transfers at the bank from account to account so that you know that it is good. Or you can do cash but you really have to check ever bill with a counterfeit detection pen and when it is 10k or more that is a lot of cash to be dealing with. I also usually meet people right at the DMV so that I leave with the title and they leave with cash, no funny business. If there is a loan on a car then it is much more of a pain to buy and sell. -Rich

How is the engine replacement worth $20K?? I don't think that is realistic from the eyes of a buyer.
But I agree with the general sentiment here of selling on your own. You can screen out any nutjobs / criminals easy enough via email, that's not going to take too much of your time. Just show it to as few serious buyers as possible. Guess it depends on if you are in a hurry (find a new vehicle NOW) etc.

if you think its worth $5-6k for your peace and energy no need to think about it.. just let it go.. but your car worth $15-16k at least for sure.. millage is not high as well and there is a new engine.. dealers do care about engine's state if its new or not etc.. they ll show how much they care to the new owner..

Most buyers you will get will be sharks and flippers out to make a quick killing by flipping. The used car dealers who sell imported cars.. They will never pay you more then what Carmax offered.
So save yourself the aggravation and just sell it to Carmax for quick and clean sale lasting just one hour of your precious time. |

You can steal them from people at 1/7 their original cost with 80k miles on them when they are only half used up. People are afraid to own them after 80k miles so it drops the price right into my lap. Honestly the OP is just going to lose by selling it. It has the new engine which is worth more to to the OP than anyone else. Heck if it breaks in the next 20k miles just throw it away and buy another 10k one from someone else. You are guaranteed to lose the 6k if you sell it and buying another one will cost you 4k with the depreciation. It is almost guaranteed that keeping it is better financially even if you have to throw it away for $4k in 20k miles. That is the cost of deciding to get a newer faster depreciating luxury vehicle... If that is worth it to you for your own personal utility that is fine but that has to overrule the financials of it. -Rich

Just to give you an idea...
I sold my 2012 x6 50i for $17,200 at the dealer. (Interior and exterior were in excellent condition) My car had 72,000 miles, (Had a brand new engine put in at 71,000 miles due to Bang Class Settlement), Clean Title, faulty oxygen sensor (cost $2000 to replace) The dealership does not care if you just had a brand new engine put in or not. All they care about is if the engine is running or not running. The dealership ended up replacing the oxygen sensors and sold the car in 4 days. If you are not in a rush I would suggest you to sell it private. |

BTW, this is exactly why I am a BMW owner. Used BMWs are a buyers market.
