I did the search..............
I am thinking of getting the X5 diesel for my wife. I would love some real life figures vs the epa. Thanks in advance. |

Other people's fuel consumption figures will not help you. Trust the sticker mpg numbers because yours will likely be very similar. If you read someone says he got 28.5 mpg, that is probably a little bit downhill with no passengers, no cargo and a bit of tailwind If you read someone is getting 15 mpg overall, that person wears lead shoes and does rabbit starts from every stop light. I feel that mine is super fuel efficient and I love to get 500+ miles out of a tank of diesel. My overall mileage is around 21 to 22 mpg but YMWV.

I do about 85% hwy and average 24.5-26.5. Depending on the traffic when I'm in the city. And no hills

Lifetime average on my 2010 with 26K miles is 25.6 and I live in a metro area so a good mix of highway and stop and go. Since I've had it I've gone through three tanks of gas that have averaged to 27 mpg. So about 600 miles on the tank of gas.

60% city / 40% hwy 22.4 - 22.6 mpg On the same routes/driving my other cars get: 10 VW Jetta TDI 13k miles - 35.8 mpg 08 BMW M3 13k miles - 17.8 mpg I drive with a very soft foot. On longer highway trips between Austin and Houston, I can get 44 in the VW but only in the high 24s on the X5. This is at the speed limit with cruise control, 70-75 mph. My best mpg is driving on local fwys at 60-65 mph, it seems to go down dramatically after 65 mph.

With my 2012 X5 and JBD i get around 20-21 city and 26-29 hwy during summer months. Winter would bring me down to 15-16 mpg city and around 23-24 hwy. Real world numbers I must admit are not that great if compared to gas models! My hwy crusing is usually at 75 mph. My driving is 80% city 20% hwy.

This is my wife's daily driver, she drives mostly suburban with little or no highway. I would say 95% with 5% highway. She gets 18 to 20 mpg with lots of short trips. |

Going to be taking a 600-mile trip with 4 people and some luggage at the end of May. The trip will be from Seattle to Spokane; up mountain pass, then gradual descent, followed by mostly level ground, with minor rolling hills.
I have gotten 575 miles on a tank once, with 90% highway. If I am light-footed on this trip, I am confident I will get there and back on 1 tank. Will report. |

I've heard the 35d from BMW is dated technology... what are your thoughts.. have you heard of a revised 35d to hit the market? I was looking at Touareg TDI w/advertised 28mpg.
I'll keep an eye on this MPG thread I find it interesting. . .thanks for posting info.

Yes, the 35d has super dated technology. The 6 speed auto is ancient and the engine has been around forever. The rumor is that the new one will have the new 8 speed auto but the same engine The Touareg on the other hand is mostly recent technology - it's a Porsche in VW clothing. Get the VW

Why? Weight? Gearing? Your lead foot? All of the above? I cannot get my 550i to do less than 11 mpg no matter how hard I accelerate or how short my trips are. In fact my overall consumption with lots of city miles is around 17 mpg, and I believe the engine is the same. Look for gasoline puddles under your car when you park

The updated VW TDI is already here, while Cayenne is yet to be released. The specs on TDI and Cayenne are identical. 35d is dated technology, yet still blows its competition out of the water. Dated technology only means less problems . |
