X5M H&R 1.2" Springs & Spacers Install

Ever since i purchased my E70 X5M in June 2018 I did not like the stance of the SAV. I kept looking at the Jeep SRT8 at work every day and noticing how good the stance looked for a factory setup.

With the help of so many members here especially boneca , gixxerboy63 , Doctor///M , RDR142 and others i was able to decide on what lowering system to go for on this truck.

I decided on H&R 1.2" Springs, H&R 12mm front and 20mm rear spacers and F10 M5 Comp Bump stops from ECSTuning . ECS went above and beyond to put together the package for me and have it delivered to me within a week of ordering, all the way to Bahrain.

Here are the install pics:

Stock front Shock with stock spring

H&R 1.2" Spring

OE X5M E70 Bum Stop Vs OE M5 F10 Comp Bump Stop

OE Vs H&R Spring

Ready to install H&R Spring and F10 M5 Comp Bump Stop

Installed

OE Vs H&R Rear Adjustable Height Links. These were set to 65mm or so i thought. It turns out they were set to 61-62mm, my mistake. We fixed this later.

Removing rear Shocks and installing F10 M5 Comp Bump Stops, They have to be pressed into the top hats by hand. Im glad i changed these as the old ones were gone from the heat

Jonathan Torquing every thing to spec

H&R 12mm front and 20mm rear Spacers with ECS Extended Bolts:

Before Spacers and lowering springs

Installing Spacers, hubs were cleaned and anti-seize applied

Spacers installed

Finished Pics with both the spacers, springs and bump stops installed:

The rear was too low and as soon as I left the shop the car was bouncing so much and the rear was so hard that it gave me a headache. Went back and adjusted the links properly this time to the H&R specified 65mm and the car drives perfect. Everything is a bit tightened up. This is the way the truck should have come from the factory.

Pic of the before and after height measurements

Sorry I ran out of memory on the DSLR so I will take some updated pics this week and post them up here. Thanks for reading.

Looks good, curious how it rides with passengers in the rear or cargo.

Have cargo in the rear but hardly ever or never have passengers in the rear of any of my cars unless necessary lol

My rears are the airbags, do they need the bumpstops too? I'm confused as you said you added them to the rear shocks and did the adjustments arms too...

What is the general consensus now? 1.2" drop with the M5 bump stops? I haven't heard of this, guess iv'e been away too long. This eliminates the bone jarring violent bumps when installing HR springs on the X5M? Sounds promising.

The drop here looks perfect.

The Bump stops are not a necessary option according to everyone else but ive installed the bump stops from Dinan on other cars and they work. The Bump Stops from Dinan are not special, they are OE BMW from another model.

If you want a good quality ride and want to prevent bottoming out in certain road conditions get four BWM F10 M5 Comp Bump stops (PN is listed in one of the posts above) and install them with ANY spring kit you install. If you have airbags in the back you'll need to order the appropriate kit suited to your vehicle which will come with two front springs and two rear adjustable links. the rear bump stops go on the rear shocks! the car still has shocks even though it has rear airbags.

Well it depends on what you want, If you want a near OE ride and the perfect lowering for this vehicle i would recommend the 1.2" H&R and Dinan kits. The Dinan doesnt make a big enough difference in height for me to justify it to be honest. the H&R 1.2" kit is perfectly fine and retains OEM ride comfort. With Any spring kit i recommend to install the F10 M5 Comp Bump Stops.

when I replaced my front shocks (KWs) couple of years ago I got new bump stops from KW, I got 2 sets front and rear, fronts were replaced while replacing the shocks as for the rear I never got to them, still in the box...

btw I was replacing KWs with KWs as coilovers were already on the car at the time (first owner beat the crap out of them in NY!)

Looks so much better! I have the H&R 2.0 and hopefully it will not be too low when I install them.
