E70 X5m Upgrades
Hi all --
New to the community but have been lurking for awhile. By way of background, I have an e70 x5m with about 65K miles that is bone stock. I am considering installing Dinan lowering springs and the Dinan ECU tune. My question is whether getting those upgrades done with this many miles would be wise from a longevity standpoint. The car has never had any major issues and has been well taken care of, but I don't want to tempt fate at this point. I had an M3 with Dinan upgrades, but those were done at much lower mileage so I don't really have any experience with getting them installed this late. I'd ideally like to hold onto the car for another 20k miles without any huge repair bills that I indirectly caused. With the ECU tune I'm worried about engine internals being put under extra stress from additional boost (I know Dinan has a warranty and engineers their parts extensively yada yada, but I'd rather not deal with the hassle). And for the springs, I've heard it can put additional stress on the struts which aren't cheap to replace out of warranty. Appreciate any feedback/insights you all could share, thanks for reading! |

Welcome aboard! Don't over think this. The E70 is strong enough to take some slight upgrades at 65k. It's barely broken in (unless abused). The Dinan upgrades you mentioned are a great choice, but also consider a Velos flash tune. The E70 guys here are happy with this upgrade. Contact stephen@velosdesignwerks & see if he can give you good deal on the tune & springs. GL

Best advice I can give you is make sure that your injector warranty work, vacuum lines, driveshaft replacement, spark plugs/coils etc... are all done.
Give it a tune up and warranty work before pumping up the HP. I started at 80k and tossed the motor via bent rod because of aged injectors. |

I did what you are thinking of. Put on a BPM Sport tune and Dinan springs at around 67K when I bought it. Truck runs awesome and handles much better after the spring install. Ride quality is surprisingly about the same as it was before the spring install. My injectors and spark plugs were done by the PO before I bought it, so I knew those items were good. I was getting a 2d2e code since I bought it, learned on this forum that my CCV ducts were leaking and causing a slight vacuum leak at idle. Replaced those a little while ago and the truck runs even better with no more codes. I wouldn’t worry about starting mods at your mileage, they are still fairly low.

welcome aboard, I assume u don't drive much as u plan is to keep the X5M for 20k miles, in my book that's only about 8 months period.
Anyway I wouldn't worry too much about the upgrades/mods at around 70k miles as the car has potential to run close to 300 if not more, don't quote me on this but I hope I started mods when bought my car at 35k miles, I'm at 97.5k miles and still modifying it As far as DINAN goes, there is nothing wrong with the springs (I would rather go with H&R but that's me) as far as tune goes I would look elsewhere, Velos is a strong candidate! Good luck

Welcome. The H&R 1.2" springs with the F10 M5 Comp bump stops should be the way to go. For tunes you have VELOS, TTFS, AA and Alpine. Get some BMC drop in air filters too.

Diamond Pistons, Carrillo Rods, ARP hardware, softer bearings, and all new gaskets throughout sounds like a great upgrade bulletproof, I won't be too sure

Thanks everyone for the feedback! M owners are the best, and one of the reasons I keep buying M cars.
I'm feeling pretty good about moving forward with the upgrades based on what I'm hearing. Might look into some tunes other than Dinan. It does sound like I'll want to make sure my injectors and plugs are in good shape. My injectors were replaced at 50k and I'm at 65 now, so I don't think there will be any issues there, but I do have a question about spark plugs. The car went in for service at the dealership at 50k miles and I don't have paperwork for that visit (I recently bought it from a third party), but based on the carfax I could dig up, it says "Spark plugs cleaned and gap adjusted." I know with these cars you want to change the plugs every 30k miles, so I was surprised to see that despite being serviced frequently at a BMW dealership, that was the only spark plug related service I can see. I did have my mechanic check them recently and he said they looked good, but I'm wondering if I still need to get them replaced. I have a call out to the BMW dealership but wanted to see if you good people had any experience with spark plugs getting "cleaned" vs. replaced. |
