Winter Tires

I'm thinking about getting the 20" wheels from the X5M and putting some nice summer tires on them. Would it be smart to take my stock 19" wheels and wrap them in some Hakkapelitta R3's for our trips up to the mountains?

I have not used the Hakkapelitta R3s, so I can't comment about those, however I have several sets of Bridgestone Blizzaks and love them. The Blizzaks give me the confidence to head up the mountains during a storm. I even used Blizzaks on my rear wheel drive 335i and they do inspire confidence. It looks like the Blizzaks are more expensive than the R3s but I think it is totally worth it.

+2 on Blizzaks, X5 and my Minivan have them. That said I think any winter compound tire will be a big improvement on snow.

i use Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow only because they are fantastic snow ability with comfort and noise of a normal A/S or Summer Tire. I cant stand the drone of snows.

Highly rec'd the Pirellis

You'll love it. The truck is heavy enough to handle the wide tires just fine in cutting into the snow.

I can confirm. Same setup here and no problems cruising the Rockies or Midwest winters.

Just a quick update for you guys. In a couple of days i'll pull the trigger on buying some new wheels and tires for the x5. After taking into consideration where I drive in Tahoe, I'm gonna go with the Hakkapeliitta 9's. I was quite tired when typing up this thread, and realized that my route through Tahoe is unplowed, and ocassionally quite icy.

I'd go with narrower, higher aspect ratio tires for winter. Look at rally cars: they use thin tires when racing in winter.

Thin and tall aspect tires for winter

Fat and low aspect for summer.
